are emails saved on the hard drive

If i just read an email from one of my accounts, is it going to be saved to my hard drive? I was reading a bunch of stuff about saving and deleting files, but not just reading them and having them saved?

web based emails aren't... but if you use something like microsoft outlook, i'm pretty sure they are.
