Are egg whites magic or something?

Every time you see some pro bodybuilder's diet mapped out, they are eating a bunch of egg whites for breakfast. I would think that with the Whey proteins that we have access to these days, you would see a lot more athletes using them instead of choking down all those egg whites. I just watched one of Ronnie Coleman's DVD's and he eats two cups of egg whites for breakfast, with 3 packets of grits. You would get almost the same amount of protein out of 2 heaping scoops of Whey isolate. I assume there is a reason that bodybuilders still eat all of these egg whites. What is it?

I know, eh? WTF is up with that? Much easier to down a proteinshake, and if you're worried about it digesting too quickly, just eat a couple of egg whites and a couple of protein shakes.

I can only agree with one of your statements. Egg whites are not all that tasty, I don't care how you fix them. The ones Ronnie Coleman were using cost 40 bucks for 64 ounces. That doesn't look very cost effective. I just think there might be a solid food being better than shakes mentality going on here. Is there any truth to that theory?
 
I can't even begin to explain how much I hate egg whites. I choke down a bunch of oatmeal in my smoothie 'cause I hate that stuff too. After I have a little something in me, I can eat my whites with an ass load of Franks Red Hot sause, and a bucket of coffee.
Whey does digest quickly, thats why I throw in my oatmeal, cottage cheese, and flax, try to slow things down. Whites are a whole food, and eggs in general are great sources of quality protien.
 
damn, I just get 15 dozen eggs for $10 bucks from sams, very cheap!

And of course I use ketchup on my egg whites, but I love ketchup, and they don't taste bad at all. You can always chop some turker and make an omlet, takes about 2 minutes.
 
Maybe it is because when dieting for a contest they want to rely more on real food than on processed stuff. I'm in contest prep now and have removed shakes myself and threw in some egg whites. Egg whites are a great replacement for some slow digesting protiens...They are kinda like tofu to me seeing how they take the taste of however you make them. I like to make mine french toast style....i sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg in them while cooking and fold it over. Once done, i put splenda and sugar-free syrup on top! YUM! :p
 
Yeah i can get like 15 dozen for like 8 bucks at Sam's. A little more time consuming compared to pouring them out of a carton, but o well. I do the same as Linzie, a little cinnamon on top and some splenda.

I do the same, I use some ketchup on the whites, they are not bad that way.
 
what do you do with the yolk? throw it out? that is the part i hate to do and i know eating 5 yolks everymorning should not be good.
 
I usually give a few of them to my dogs. Just a few though because it is good for their coat...makes it shiny. Not too much though or little rover will keel over at age 78 (dog years)
 
The Pros Use Real Food Because Supplements Are Only Good For Convience When Having A Meal Aint Possible, Other Than That The Shakes And Shit Cant Beat The Real Deal,ure Average Person Dont Even Need Supplements They Can Get All They Need From The Correct Food,97%of Ure Gains Will Come From Hard Work And Your Deit, The Other 3% Comes From Supplements, So I Aint Saying They Are Worthless,(because They Are Not)but Why Chase After That 3% With Supplements, When U Can Get In Great Shape Without, Obviously When Ure Competeing And Very Fit, U Will Chase That 3% To Give U That Edge Over The Opposition, But For Ure Average Person They Aint That Effective.

Im Talking About Legal Supplemts Here Like They Powders And Zinc/calcium Tablets E.c.t

Of Course If We Are Talking About Illegal Supplements, There Is No Doubt That They Work.
 
I havent been using protein shakes now for about 2 months and im getting bigger than ever!
After and sometimes during a session i would drink a half dozen eggs, including 3 or 4 yolks RAW.
The gains im making are very noticable. Eggs are by far the best nutition for bodybuilding. only bad thing about them is high in saturated fat which is why i only drink them on training days.
I like the taste as i have trained my body to like them. they taste a little like chicken. Im not sure if i'll ever go back to drinking shakes although sometimes after a session at the gym immedietly i would buy a 50g protein 50g carb shake.

You cant beat eggs.

The only problem with using raw egg whites, apart from the obvious risks of salmonella and e.coli, is that it can result in a Biotin deficiency which will result in incomplete protein metabolism and incomplete release of food energy.

Get the Omega 3 eggs 4gs of fat and 1 gram of sat fat 6gs of protein , hell even a real egg only has 1.5gs of fat in it. They are fine protein souce as long as no more then 15% of total fat cals are from Sat fat u are good to go
 
I buy them in cartons (pasteurized)...and I drink them, they taste like water to me. shakes to me are SUPPLEMENTS...I use them only after training or if I can in no way have a solid meal...real food is superior over processed food....
