I am going to get my mom an apple computer but I have never purchased one. Are they easier to use than windows based computers? Also are there processor types (i.e. pentium, celeron, etc..) to look at or are they all the same? Also does anyone know of any classes that are offered as a basic introduction to it? or do they come with tutorials?

Thanks

PCs are generally cheaper - lots of advantages. Nothing difficult about using a PC.

Easier to find software, support...

Sup to you.

Why are you going to get her an apple? Unless she's going to be doing graphic design or something getting a PC will be much easier for a beginner, much cheaper, too. Especially if all she's using it for is the internet and email...

A PC and a Mac are easy to use. There isn't one computer that's easier to use for surfing the web or checking email (although Outlook can be a problem sometimes).

Contrary to popular belief, software isn't hard to find for Macs. You just resort to ordering it online most of the time unless you live in a large city. However, most people aren't buying software every week. Most of what she needs will be bundled with the Mac, with exception to Office.

I use a Mac. So does everyone in my family (we use it to videochat). A lot of government agencies are adopting Macs now because of their security. No, they aren't immune, but there aren't any active viruses/trojans in the wild affecting Macs right now.

she uses it a lot for picture editting. She is very unhappy with microsoft's editor

I have an 20" IMac and Macbook Pro, i love em both. she will be happy with anything you choose for her. $1099 for a macbook, or $1000 for an iMac. only thing is i suggest not buying additional ram from them, you can get it elsewhere for a lot cheaper.

Then she can snag gimpshop and that's an excellent free image editor.

Wait, Apples exist outside of schools and universities? I never knew that.

And the only reason you found them there is that Apple gave them to them, or practically gave them to them...

I know. That's why I hate schools pushing Apples.

The company I work for uses apples alot - just PCs for accounting - but we also do a lot of graphic design.

It pisses me off the damn apple key is where the alt key is and you have to use it constantly like apple-c to copy/paste, etc.

Switching between apple and PC from work to home gets old.

I've always had to switch between multiple systems in the course of a working day, so adding Mac to the mix was no big deal. Found out I liked it, for the most part.

Over the past few years I've demanded that we give the apple computers back to whoever donated them to us in one of the computer labs at my school. Nothing worse than having to use a mac when you need to get stuff done - mac office is the fucken worst.

my wife just bought a mac, there pretty neat

Do you go both ways?

MAC's modern OS's are basically linux with their own GUI...
