"Skype (IPA pronunciation: /skʌɪp/, rhymes with type) is a peer-to-peer Internet telephony network founded by the entrepreneurs Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, also founders of the file sharing application Kazaa. It competes against existing open VoIP protocols such as SIP, IAX, and H.323. The Skype Group, acquired by eBay in October 2005, is headquartered in Luxembourg, with offices in London, Tallinn and Prague.[1]

Skype has experienced rapid growth in both popular usage and software development since launch, both of its free and its paid services. The Skype communications system is notable for its broad range of features, including free voice and video conferencing, its ability to use peer to peer (decentralized) technology to overcome common firewall and NAT (Network address translation) problems, and its extreme[citation needed] countermeasures against reverse engineering of the software or protocol."

Uuuummmmm.... I think it diverges?

:cow:

you can use it to make calls from your computer and number that comes up on caller id is like 00000111 or some shit pretty sick shit..

I used Skype a few times in 2003 when I worked from home. I felt kinda stupid talking into the speaker on my laptop tho and my cat would walk around the house trying to find where the other voice was coming from. Haven't used it since.

I think eBay is still trying to figure out a good revenue model for it....

As someone who has been in the VOIP industry on the product / development side since 1998, I'd say that Skype is by far the best quality and lowest latency VOIP communication tool due to its peer-to-peer architecture.

so check this. I have skype on my computer in the house and can use a blue tooth device to talk hands free within range. Practically free calls at home. Then I have this sweet new phone from Hong Kong that has WiFi with Skype download so anytime I'm in a hotspot I can connect to Skype with my cell and not use Cingular minutes to talk. You can also call my cell via Skype when I'm in a hotspot and the call is free. I love Tech shit.

If you lived in an area like SF that had lots of WiFi towers this would really kill right now. Right now one big things at the FCC is WiFi Max which allows for a larger coverage area than traditional routers. As soon as it is good(real soon) then WiFi can be spread throughout the city easier and then VoIP will be the best way to call, cell prices will go way down.

I'm getting a skype wireless home phone soon, to untether me from the pc.
sfmonster, what brand is your phone? A couple people I know might be going to HK soon..

I gotta check this -- SFMonster = san fran ? I'm moving to the peninsula at the end of the month... is the wifi stuff stretching that far south?

I have a dopod D810. Basically all of the windows moble 5 phones are the same with just a few small features different. As for getting it overseas it isn't a big deal because the prices are just as good online(ebay) and they will be unlocked just like over there. The only downside to ebay is no support but being stateside you won't get that support anyway. Also I see some of the US carriers selling the new phones already, they just aren't unlocked(not an issue if you don't leave the states)

No I'm not in San Francisco right now but I'm in the communications field so I keep up on what is going on that way. I'm not sure how big there coverage is but bottom line is it is coming soon to all the heavy urban areas. Systems are perfect yet, sometime people say they have an echo on their end but it is alway crystal clear for me. I'll try to get some more info on the Cali areas for ya.
