I saw a really fancy chrome version years ago, it was very expensive and it was owned by a guy who trained pro baseball players. I used it a few times and liked it, its very different and pretty effective, felt good. Then the cheap version, the "total gym" came out and although its not big or strong enough for me, there are bigger versions out there. Anyone use them?

the total gym is a good machine to keep in shape. however i dont think its going to build any large muscle mass, you need heavy free weights for that.

Oh, of course I wasnt thinking of making it my primary workout, just something different to do at home when Im hanging out, or for morning excercise, or when I dont make it to the gym etc. It seems like a nice complementary excercise to weightlifting.

Have you checked out their website? I was thinking they had a variety of versions available. I don't own one myself, but supposedly they are a nice addition to freeweights (I have heard serious weight lifters says this-really!).

The total gym is an excellent piece to add to a home gym, athletic training facility or rehab center.

It won't build gigantic mass, but it can maintain muscle, increase & keep range of motion, and is excellent at rehabing injuries where free weights are too heavy and the path of motion needs to be controlled.

but the best model is the re-hab model. Its not the one that is on tv. You need to go to their website. Unfortunatley its costs over $2,000

the total gym is not for adding muscle, only for losing fat while dieting, imho. its more like a cardio workout then anything.

???? Obviousy you have not used one. You can add a good deal of muscle, not as much as with free weights but there are many unique exercises that can stress your body in new movement patterns leading to strength & muscle increases. Although to get the best benefits you really need to use the optional free weight attachment to increase the load.

I've never used one, and don't know anyone who does, but I would think it might be good for some GPP work or light conditioning on your days off.

I would have to try one first to see for sure, though......

Try one, the movements are uniques & place excellent stress in new movement patterns which can result in excellent strength gains. although as I have said before you need free weights for maximum mass.

The total gym is not crap! Yes 99% of the shit sold in infomercials & mags is pure garbage - but this is the exception. Again, the therapy model is the best one for it has the most durable construction

Remember, mediocre minds build mediocre bodies!!
