im looking for a newbie electric package. i have been playing at my friends house very often and im a very musical persona nd really enjoy playing. he is very good nad has given me some recomendations for guitars but wanted to know what your recomendations are also.....

Well, if you are just beginning I'd say any form of a strat is a good place to start, be it a squier, or a fender. When you are beginning it doesn't really matter what you get, because you are going to suck no matter what, but once you learn to play a bit you can decide which guitar's feel you like best and suits your style. Personally I love Gibson SG's as far as electrics go, but they are going to run you about 6-700 for the low end model if you are lucky. More likely it will be over a thousand. I learned to play more on an acoustic (and still like to play acoustic more in fact) and I think it really made playing on an electric a lot easier. There is nothing quite as sweet as playing as nice top of the line Martin acoustic. So easy to play.

Good points.

My first guitar & amp was a 29.00 electric guitar from Woolworth's.
As i learned to play, i finally bought a fender mustang, but eventually my true love turned out to be a Gibson Les Paul custom, made left handed to my requests.

I sweetened the sound even more by adding Dean Markley (light guage) strings.

My preferred amplifier is a Peavey Deuce (tube amp)
Ran thru a Rockman control box.

why yes i think i play guitar. hehe. what's up?

best bet: get a guitar that YOU enjoy. feels right in your hand. that you love. Because let's be honest. Once you learn it,a nd master it -- your view of guitars and what's good and bad, and what you want will change. So why waste so much time and energy when you barely know most of the details (trust me us purists can sit there and analyze a guitar to death before buying it).

get something cool, that fits your need. Me: I'm a les paul guy. Randy Rhoads, Zakk Wylde school. So first thing i wanted was a bad-ass Gibson with a marshall stack for that metal sound. Maybe you're into blues and a SRV strat would be nice. Or you're more punk, etc. It's about what u want. You'll get a zillion opinions on what's a good guitar for starters. It's up to you.

but i can suggest to STAY AWAY from any guitar that has the word "starter" on it. Those $150 starter packages are pieces of shit that are worthless. Don't even waste your time unless u like a horrible sound and a guitar that goes out of tune every 5 minutes. :)

Yeah that is true, they do suck farts. But still, I bought a Casino way back when before I really learned how to play, and I ended up not playing to the style of the Casino at all and it was pretty frustrating trying to play on it. Therefore it would have been better in my case to learn to play on something simple before I spent a lot of money on a nicer guitar that I had no idea about. I'd say any 250-300 dollar strat is a great place to start. Or even the low end Les Pauls are usually around that range.

I wish I had started on an acoustic to be honest.

I am sporting a jackson kelly right now, its a shred monster.

Electrics will run you a lot of money, be prepared to get what you pay for.

What is your budget?

There are some beginner and beginner-priced guitars that are of near-professional quality. The Squier Affinity Telecaster and Squier Affinity Stratocaster are really pretty decent guitars, and will only set you back $150 or less. And the Chinese-made Danelectro guitars are great, and are dirt cheap.

It's much more difficult to find a good sounding low-priced amplifier to go with that great low-dough guitar.

hehe... my gf bought me a brand spankin nu white lp custom (now custom shop as white is no longer factory) for xmas... :D

friend has a squier strat used for 70 bucks he says he'll sell me, what do u all htink abou thtat, good idea or no?

NO. 20 bux max. They had a sale at GC awhile back for a squire and amp for 100 bux lol. Get a mexican strat... great beginner guitar. Some of the squires have 3/4 sized necks too... you are too big for that. Ebay a used fender MIM strat.. should do you well.

I used to have a Squier strat back in the day. It actually wasn't a horrible guitar. After about a year, I put all new electronics in it, new tuners, an LSR roller nut and wired it all with monster wire. That helped a lot. But for a starter, that would be fine IMO. I would buy it, fuck around with it and if you actually decide to stick with it, upgrade to something better down the road. No sense in going out and buying a $1,000 paper weight.

i just bought an ibanez rg220b, first i played a squier strat. this new guitar...man... i LOVE it.

I'm gonna get an electric soon too. I've been strictly acoustic for ~ a year and a half. I love the sound of a Les Paul, but I'm also partial to Fender Strats. Decisions, decisions.

Do listen to Razorguns about getting a guitar that's right for you, though. That's where it's gonna start.
