New member
Just wondered.. I will be 49 1/2 and doing my first show in Aug.. I AM EXCITED.. but my body is a lot different than a 25 year old..

What are your thoughts?? thanx :worried:

Congratulations, that is fantastic. Can we see some pictures of you? How long have you been training for?

I will be 40 this year and am working hard at getting a harder body again after having two kids. You give me great inspiration.

I have to get my camera working and I will upload some pictures,,, this is new to me..
I have lifted weights for 20 years..I geared more towards biking 50 miles or more.. Running 12 15 miles etc.. every 5 years I like to challenge myself.. so I am studying to be a PT and hired one... He saw me and SAID LETS TRAIN FOR THE DEBBIE KRUCK
CLASSIC AS A NOVICE... SO HERE I AM -- The only problem is that in Aug I will be 49 2/3 giggling I wish I could compete with the over 50's ..

That is AWESOME! Which type show? Figure / BB? I was just thinking if you are a distance biker, you must have some serious quads .... Among the women's competitions, I actually really enjoy seeing the Masters level ... I've even seen an Over 70 category for women w/ 3 ladies in that group (and OVER 80! for men...they just need to remember to turn up their hearing aids ... they can't hear the pose call-outs so they sort of wait for one of them to pick a pose and the rest sort of follow ...)

Yes I would LOVE to see pictures!

BTW I'll be 40 this year & did my first show at 35. Maybe one this year.

My trainer is in luv with my LEGS.. that and my broad shoulders,,, LOL ... you know I am really hard on myself .. I dont see it but he does,,, So I am trying to eat very clean... My husband has a whole bus full of people coming.. so I cant disappoint..
I luv this site Sassy .. I read a lot of you info .. it helps me Keep it up ...
I too do split cardio .. 30 morning and 30 nite.. it helps my metabolism .. I have a thyroid problem and going thru menopause 2 STRIKES AGAINST ME ... but that just makes me work harder..
You know I was 26 (after my second child) my doctor found out my thyroid problem.. I couldnt lose weight after having my child... anyway I WILL NEVER EVER FORGET THIS.. she said... You know you can stay in shape ... but you will have to work a little harder than others... You can do it... AND I NEVER LOOKED BACK!! she gave me sound advice!

That is absolutely fabulous! I am SO EXCITED for you. Cannot wait to see some pics :rose:

I am getting nervous... My trainer wants me to compete in the Mid Central Fl show in June... THAT IS SOOO CLOSE.. OK everyone.. talk to me ... I AM GOING TO BE 50 FOR GOODNESS SAKE AND I AM DOING THIS ...

Talk to me about preparing diet clothes hair etc...

You know fear keeps you "YOUTHFUL"

Does your trainer know anything about contest prep -- not the training / diet part, but the contest itself? Do you have anyone in your gym or near you who has done a show? Its pretty easy, however I understand the "fear" -- you almost need to stumble thru one show yourself to really understand how to "do" a show.

Things you need:
- posing suits
- protan
- a routine / music
- excell at your quarter turns & required poses
- makeup
- hair

I"ll catch up with this thread later -- I have to go see my massage therapist about my back in a few.

What are your current stats - weight, ht, bf, and targeted competition wt / bf?

Yes my trainer has done many shows.. Last year he come in 2nd place Florida show.. he is very very educated ... and has eased me into it... I am just getting JITTERY.. giggling.. I am heading to my gym ... too talk with you later

thanks Sassy for your support
My husband has a Digital camera (we have had it for over a month.. hummm shows that we have TOOO MUCH) anyway.. tomorrow i am going to met up with a friend that is going to walk me thur it.. so I can upload pictures... I JUST DONT HAVE TIME FOR THAT JUNK .. giggling
And my girlfriend is a wonderful hairdresser.. My trainer has introduced me to well known professional fitness competitors THEY WERE WONDERFUL WITH ME.. ..
I am worried about my body fat.. my trainer said that he hasnt met a person as driven .. he luvs that about me.. giggling.. I will never forget that comment..
He also emails me everyday.. he is one in a million

thanks Sassy

Ok so your trainer has helped women do shows as well? I'm asking because the way a guy does a show isn't the same as for a women. Diff poses, etc. and obviously the whole suit & makeup thing isn't a big deal for guys. Even the music becomes an issue because guys do more just straight posing and a little more hamming it up on stage while the women tend to do more choreographed routines. And generally it seems the judges like feminine performances, i.e. no heavy metal, etc.

I also wanted to ask if there are any other shows within a few weeks after the show you are targeting? The reason I ask is -- you say you are a little worried about your bf. The reality of shows is that it isn't how many weeks away, but how much bodyfat away. If you happened to not get down to your goal, or you get to your goal but you still have room for improvement, most BB's will schedule a couple shows in the same time frame so they get more experience as well as have another chance and a little more time to dial in their diet / tighten up / whatever and really get the most out of all the work you've put into prep.

Yes he has prepped other women for shows... so to speak.. LOL ... I have to have humor! ... :mix: Yepper the first show is June 18th the second show is
End of july or Aug... goodness I will have to look ...
I am worried about my mid section.... THAT IS MY MAIN CONCERN.. he said my legs arms back etc .. are pretty good... but working to be BEST...
I will have the alternative to wear a one piece and lose a point.. OH HELL WHO CARE ABOUT ONE POINT .. excuse me !! :qt: ....
so i am 22 weeks away

what do you think!
what do you do and what does you diet look like sassy

What is your current body fat? Also you are looking to do figure or BB?

And as far as your midsection -- trust me, everyone has their "challenges" -- mine happens to be my ass & thighs. Like I said, your bodyfat determines your ability to make a good showing in a competition. (Also depends figure or BB.) Just keep up your training and some amazing changes can happen so don't worry too much about it until you start getting much closer so you know where your issues are going to be. Then you can also focus your posing to expose your best parts. And don't do just a one piece. If that's where you are in your prep, you are better off fine tuning and doing a later show. My opinion anyway because you are cheating yourself by not putting it all out there. All the other cometittors are and you worked hard to get there.

22 weeks gives you some room to wiggle so use it!

You can see what my diet & training look like on my Sassy 2005 thread. I'm trying a little switch up on the order of the protein shake meals. We'll see what that does.

Thanks Sassy your the best... I am curious on your thoughts on Protein shakes.. do you think they are better than food.. ex egg whites chicken breast etc.. I have read all about whey and its is a valuable source of protein.. but some days I just would rather eat CHICKEN :mix: ... YOU HAVE HAD A LOT OF EXPERIENCE body building .. what are your thoughts..'
thanks and I am going to your thread too look at your food.. I am losing fat .. and it feels good.. once i plateau i will post my diet .. :mix:

I will be 56 in April. I competed in USCF National Cycling Criterium for the first time last year and plan to do it again this July. I didn't ride a road bike until I was 51! I also lift with my daughter (34 yrs old) who turned me on to this site. All I have to say is this is the rest of your life so get over it and get on with it. Let go of ego and enjoy every moment that you are taking life by the horns and living it to the fullest. I am excited for you knowing that you are a winner no matter the color of the ribbon!

Protein shakes -- personally I think "real food" is always better. But it would be a challenge for me to pack 4-5 meals & bring them to work every day. And sometimes I'm just not really that hungry. So a protein shake is a good compromise for gettign your "refuelings" in and they digest quickly so you don't feel majorly full by the next meal. Or, equivalently, if your body is burning like a fine-tuned furnace, you'll be raving starving by the next meal. They are more flexible in that you can put other stuff in them to tweak the "fueling" - e.g. dextrose or fats, glutamine, etc. The challenge is to find an affordable, good-quality brand that you can choke down. If I have to chug "chalk" 2-3 x / day it won't happen. And a final comment is that it is yet another 12 oz of water that goes into the system. Keeps the pipes flushed.

Just to keep this in perspective (LOL), I've done 2 BB shows and attempted a 3rd. I think you will always find that every person you speak to about "how to compete" will have a different approach, so I always like to learn, but can also speak to my experiences -especially to a newbie because I was you when I did my first show, except I didnt' get a lot of direction when it came to the suit, the tanning and really dragged on hair & makeup. I made a point of trying to do this better for the 2nd show and paid more attention to it. Sure I wanted to make a good showing, but for me it started more as a goal for a combined diet / training effort and also a personal challenge to overcome my stage fright.

I got the initial stage fright beat out of me when I got a teaching assistantship in college and had to teach university physics to a bunch of architecture (non-calculus) students who were all older than me. A few rounds of that I could at least hold some authority while yammering about the definition of Torque. But I never felt very graceful up in front of people.

Here's my experience from my first show-- I executed all my quarter turns w/ military precision. I did my routine but definitily wasn't comfortable. This is where the "how to do a show" part comes in if you aren't naturally a "showy" person. I am everything but a "showy" person. The judges are looking for physique, but also confidence on stage, execution of the poses and a smile. Here's where you are supposed to have FUN on the stage. You need to be FUCKING (skuz my french) PROUD OF THE WORK YOU'VE DONE and EXUDE it so the world can see. You have to be like "LOOK AT MY FRIGGEN HUGE SHREDDED QUAD PEOPLE! LOOK! YOU WILL NEVER SEE A QUAD LIKE THIS AGAIN IN YOUR LIFE!" And even give a little smirk to go w/ it. Like "yea baby, you know its big, I know its big, so just give me the damn trophy".

Oh yea, did I mention by the time my group got on stage for the morning pre-judge, a few of us were already 1/2 way into a bottle of red wine? Yea. That helped ALOT with the presentation part. Since I'd already been brought down to about 6 oz of water to sip over the course of the day, my was chewing the sides of my mouth and a nervous wreck. Wine is also a diuretic so it was "acceptable". OK I'd discuss this w/ your trainer more before you go and kill a bottle of Rossi before the prejudge, but it helped w/ getting a little more relaxed.

LOL Sassy I enjoyed your sumation of a show ... We as women should be proud of our bodies but BOY our society does a number on us... even at this age (49) I am insecure.. But I am proud of my accomplishments thus far...

HEY SORONAN GAL ==== YOU GO GIRL.. I wish they had fitness magazines geared towards our age group.. I thought MORE would be the one .. but it is a Hollywood magazine!!!!

ONE LAST QUESTION;;;; "LET'S TALK CELLULITE.. AS I LOSE BODY FAT WILL THAT GO AWAY????????????.. Its right below my butt...UGHHHHHHHHHHHH

That's why I'm saying -- people often draw their confidence from 1) their accomplishments and 2) their presentation. If you look good, you feel good. Esp if you aren't a flamboyant person who just sort of 'is" beautiful, it gets overwhelming when you try to get that look. And its so critical on stage because you have to make your small body look big and beautiful under these glaring lights to people are far away from the stage. And aside from how you carry yourself, there is an art to getting just the right hair & makeup. I'd also strongly suggest goign to see as many shows as you can prior to yours and see what the girls look like & how they judge them. Particularly in figure its hard to tell what they are looking for - leanness or muscle. (It seems to vary from show to show as well...) But see if you can talk to some of the girls about how they handle gettign their hair looking so great that early in the morning, how much & what kind of makeup they use, etc.

Oh yea, you're getting the shoes right? Make sure you are comfortable walking in them so you don't trip or wobble LOL! It looks like no one buys the big 4" hooker shoes anymore -- there are nice normal strappy lucite shoes that they use now and they look very nice. Just make sure you can walk in them up & down stairs while smiling and looking ahead / not down. :)

I AM LAUGHING OUT LOUD AND THE THOUGHT OF ME WEARING THOSE LUCITE SHOES... My hubby has a bus load of people coming.. I COULD BEAT HIM... Its not like I NEED ADDED PRESSURE... We watched the superbowl last nite at a local place... AND EVERYONE COME UP TO ME -- SAYING "I WILL BE THERE" OHHHHH MY GOSH!
HELP ME.... I AM GOING TO STOP HIM!!!

Hey Sassy " DO YOU THINK IF I LOSE THE FAT THE CELLULITE WILL GO AWAY????"
I have some around my butt....

The biggest challenge is losing the bodyfat around the estrogen-related areas (hips, thighs, rear). Will it go away? I've never seen any of the pro competitors w/ cellulite. At least not on stage. I can't say if it will go away, but get lower bodyfat & see what happens.

Has your trainer suggested any topical fatloss aids, e.g. yohimburn (see AF Store), then wrap up in saran wrap in teh trouble areas & do cardio.

As far as audience goes -- let me tell you what -- there's NOTHING more exciting than you lovin yourself on stage and the audience making ALOT of noise when you get your turn in the spotlight. Its ALOT better than hearing crickets.... It just goes that much farther to making you feel like you own that stage. That's where I keep tellign you, you need to just eat it up when you get up there. Its an experience you've never had before. So live it! Be it! OWN IT!

THANKS SASSY ... I CAN TELL YOU THAT I HAVE BEEN EATING CLEAN for 3 weeks and my mid section FEELS SOOOOO MUCH BETTER... I luv that... inturn .. i believe if i continue... THE CELLILUTE WILL GO AWAY...

I keep laughing ... I AM PICTURING ME IN LUCITE SHOES .. LOL..

I was looking to do a big regional show in 2002, but lost my focus. Then for a brief glimmer of time I thought maybe I could pull off the figure competition at the same show. So I ran out & bought a pair of serious fuck-me shoes -- 4" heels w/ a 2" platform. OMG. Why??? You can't even put one on w/o the other for fear of falling over & breakign an ankle. Crazy stuff.

I guess I have them if I ever want them....:worried:

The normal-heeled lucite shoes actually look nice. And honestly , the girls who wear solid color shoes up on stage I find the shoes actually distracting. The clear shoes just give the nice heeled look & give you a chance to work the calves (which BB's don't have) but still not distract from the focus -- the body, the suit, the face.

That's awesome girl! Doesn't it just validate what you are doing when the results are that tangible?

I"m 4 weeks out today. Its going to be an aggressive 4 weeks cuz I've got some issues, well, actually some "ass-ues"...

Just this past week or so I've made significant progress with my leaning out and my muscles are starting to show seperation on my upper body. I also added a cell-volumizer to my training so I get a little more popping while I train. I've had more people ask me how I get my back to pop or how big my triceps are. There was this one women who looked to be sort of frumpy and in her 50s and new to the gym. She was standing behind me doing bad-form side laterals w/ 3 lb dbs and just stared at my back for all 4 of my shoulder supersets. I felt sort of bad, but I smiled at her and sort of gave her the "atta girl" look. She smiled back and asked how long I'd been training. I told her how long and she said, 'well now I don't feel so bad'... LOL!

I love it tho. I can actually muscle thru these nutty supersets the trainer has me doing because I get off on watching the muscle detail I"m getting, and also sort of scoping out who is watching ;) There arent' a lot of muscle heads at my gym, so I guess the muscle detail thing is new to a lot of the people there.

As far as the over 40 thing, just with my trainer alone there are 4 of us who - every one of us in meeting each other have started out our discussion of goals with "Well, I'm turning 39/40 this year and want to get my shit in order" -- and I will tell you that NONE of us looks 40. (I wish I WAS 29, instead of looking like 29, however, I will take what I can get ...!)

I love this thread. I'm not yet, 40, but knocking on the door. I'm 37. I adore Sassy and her advice, especially about the scheduling. I live here in the plywood state as well and there are a ton of npc shows in central florida around that time. I'm shooting for doing one end of July beginning of August. Haven't picked on yet. Gotta see where I come out during that time frame. Be steady and consistent. You'll achieve all your goals. :)

Not been here this year. Well, I'm 42, will be 43 in July.

I'm going to take part in a powerlifting comp in May. It's a RAW-comp, because I wouldn't even dream of wearing those silly-looking bench-shirts. I have certain goals, but, just to stay on the safe side, I won't publish them now. Will tell later, how it went. My first comp ever, including squat and deadlift, too. I once was in a bench event, was the only female competitor. Let's see if there will be other women this time.

I'm doing all sorts of stuff and 2 50 min sessiosn of cardio / day. Also experimenting with some further carb rotation.

yikes.....2 sessions 50 minutes a whack. I'm doing 2 sessions at 30 minutes a pop...At 29 minutes, I'm freaking out...I literally am counting seconds down to get off of stair climber or treadmill. I just couldn't hate it anymore than I do. The only day I don't do evening cardio is on leg day. After leg day, I can hardly walk let alone get on the stair climber.

Iamfirmin...yup competing sometime this summer. Haven't picked a show for sure yet. I know I'll be pretty close come mid-July. I'd like to do the one in St. Augustine in July but, I am really not sure I'll be ready by then. Deb's show seems way more realistic but garnishes some more competitors. This will be my first show so I don't want to make any unrealistic goals. Baby steps, ya know.

Thanks Sassy .. When I lived in Pittsburgh I went tooo many many shows.. but now
i am going for another reason LOL..

So Sassy what color posing suits do you buy... I watched What Judges want 500 times .. LOL i am going to pick a deep rich burgundy or copper .. and a cobalt blue or maybe go black i have to pick it today
and COLOR DEPENDS ON WHAT LOOKS GOOD ON YOU!! smiling I luv this stuff

I'm going w/ a shiny royal blue on my nite suit. Still have to get the AM suit. If needed I can fall back on my old pre-judge suit in midnight blue.

I just turned 40 and for my 40th bday I became a nutritionist and next goal is personal trainer. I had many health issues, endometriosis, total hysterectomy, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, borderline diabetes. All that happened 5 yrs ago, thrusted my entire being into researching ways of naturally replacing hormones, changing my lifestyle of eating and dropped 70 lbs, use natural hormone replacement and have been physically working out in gyms for 15 yrs but since osteoporosis/osteoarthris crept in these past few months, I am having some difficulties in building muscle and lifting weights. HOWEVER, GOD PLACED ME IN THIS PROFESSION to help others not have unnecessary hysterectomies, take unnecessary medications, to train them to eat properly, exercise and I am living proof of how much better 40 looks than when I was 20 hahha. But I live in Treasure Coast area of FL and my goal someday, somehow is to compete or teach professionally or both to all women (estrogen dominent was the reason for my illness and weight problems). Anyways, 40 is the new 20, and 50 is the new 30!! Ladies, keep it up. If anyone knows of anything to help ease the OA and Osteoporosis so I can lift again, I tried glucosamine chondritin with MSM, arthritis pills, celebrex, pain pills (not my bag) I am a natural chick. I would appreciate any suggestions!!!!! I can beat this....Thanks for listening. FITNUT at 40

Hi,

Yup, the exact same age as you....and FOR SURE the body is much different than 20 years ago.

In fact, in order to develp muscle tone, because I had become a hard gainner, I started a cycle of Anavar, and YIPEE, with my clean diet and my hard work, I look great.

I was told on these boards, that it was all about diet, well I had a great diet, but I was mush. I knew that I needed a kick, and a kick I go. I am in week 7 and every day is better than the last.

Thinking of doing a show in September for kicks.

Nice to see someone around my age!
