Anyone know of any good martial fighting schools here in NJ?

I'm not talking the fancy shmancy styles because even though I respect everything that goes with it, they aren't really practical in the real world until you get to the higher levels of training. I want real combat skills that allow someone to defend themselves. I took martial arts back in the day and I want to get back into it. My girlfriend now is all but 5'1 and 100 pounds. She's so cute and at only 18 is a 2nd degree black belt in tae kwon do. You wouldn't be able to tell at all since she is so tiny and curvy but she's good. She hasn't been back into it since school and work but she will go back soon and she motivated my ass to get back into it as well. Just not Tae kwon do though. Again, more practical real world fighting schools I want here. :D

I know a few..... go to mixedmartialarts.com and go to find a school. u'll find some good ones. Just beware cuz the first school i went to all the instructors did was talk about all these street fights they got into..20% of the class was stories. just make sure u're constantly learning and that the guys know what they're doing and that the place is CLEAN. that same place i got fuckin scabies and ring worm from those dirty fucks. lol didn't mean to scare you LOL

krav maga is the nastiest shit out there. Talk about real life situation fighting skills. Its used by the Isreali military, one of the most active militaries in the world.

ye, im from northern jersey, and go to rutgers, im about to start juijitsu classes next week given by my school(only 15$ a semester). some of my friends up north are taking ultimate fighting classes. i think these are a good mixture of many real world techniques. ill see if i can find out the name of the place.

cant wait to see ufc in AC this weekend...return of tank abbot(what a fat bastard, hope he gets his ass kicked)

Wow, surprisingly unbiased post!

General consensus is that a mix of groundfighting and standup is the best combo (i.e. mixed martial arts). Sambo, Pancrase and general MMA classes offer those. You could also just cross-train in BJJ or wrestling and Muay Thai or boxing, arguably the most effective grappling and striking arts. Krav Maga is a mix of those and several others but also deals with stuff like knife, gun and stick defenses, multiple attackers and other fun stuff like that.

And yeah, rule of thumb, stay away from the TKD/Kung Fu/Karate types (except for Kyokushin Karate which is just f'in hardcore). Yes there are good schools (and a lot more bad ones), but that's not what you want.

Stick with BJJ, grappling, there's nothing like it. I've done Tae Kwon Do and Gung Fu also and IMO BJJ is best by far. If you let me know where in NJ you are (that's my home state BTW), I'll find a school for you.
