my first guitar was a 29.00 model!
The Marshall amp will work , but i would prefer a Peavy Backstage, More Effects and reverb.
129.00 At most music stores!
The effects will keep his interest up!

i would say spend more on the guitar.....

ack! more on the guitar, more on the amp?
i don't even know if he'll stick with it yet.

Squier's are pretty good first guitars. They are basically beginner or cheap versions of fender guitars. I know a lot of people who learned on a squier. You could probably get a fender for pretty cheap in a lot of cases also, but there wouldn't be much difference between a cheap fender and a squier stratocaster. For a beginner having something fancy won't be of much help until you learn to play. Looks good to me.

I have played guitar since 1986/ My first and second guitars were the biggest piece of shits. A Globl Les Paul knock off, and a Lotus EVH knock off with the white and black stripes. Personanly a squire is ok, but I am not a big fan, not even for a beginner. The action is set like shit on them and for most, it will make a young player not want to play the guitar. Not always the case, but most of the time.

Here is my recommendations.
First, fuck Sam Ashe. They are shit and a shitty corporation that I will not do business with.
Go to www.musiciansfriend.com
Sign up an account with them.
Here are three guitars I would choose from. Cool colors, which you people may laugh because I said that, but if a kid likes the look of his guitar, he will play it a hell of a lot more. These guitars also have great action and playability,
LTD ESP Viper 516676
LTD/ESP F-50 516677
LTD/ESP H-50 516683
All are between 195-199 dollars. a steal!
Just key in the numbers I presented above on the search page of MF website.
The amp will be fine. An amp will not be the reason your son decides to play or not. It will be the playability of the guitar.

acoustic?

I'm glad I did'nt have to learn on a acoustic. I would have never stayed with it. To this day, I still do not like acoustics all that well. That is why they make acoustic simulaters!

In my experience, I learned on a pretty crappy guitar. I played a lot and practiced a lot and learned how to be good on that bad guitar. Once I finally got to play a nice guitar it made me a lot better learning on that bad guitar. I could play everything so much easier on a nice SG or a Martin Accoustic and it was almost easy for a lot of songs. I felt it helped a lot and made me better.

I agree slickdad, but I would say we are the few. I wanted to learn how to play so bad, it probably would'nt have mattered how bad the electric was. I still play everyday.

Peavy rocks!!

Sugarplum, if he isn't guitar-biased, then try to start him out on an acoustic. They are harder to learn than electric, but if he can learn good fundamentals on that, then get him a good electric/amp and watch him shred.

he wanted electric. i bought one. it was a package deal and after talking to the saleman, decided that after a year i'll trade up if my son is still into it-
i got a squire (by fender) guitar, a small amp, cables, a soft case, strap, and a 2 year service deal thing where they will tune it, fix it, and replace strings if necessary... all for $220.
my son is SOOOO happy and i THINK my next door neighbor's (she is a substitute music teacher) son plays the guitar (someone in the house does) and he's a great kid- i'm gonna ask him if he'd give my son lessons.
when i leaving the guitar store, my cell phone rang. my ringtone is 'bad moon rising'. within 3 notes half the store said "OH, bad moon rising!".

I think the Squier is a good choice for a beginner guitar. I dunno about the $99 ones, but the $250 Squiers are set up pretty much about as well as any other mass produced instrument. The Squiers generally fall into the "cheap 'n cheerful" category.

The service contract sounds okay, but the kid should learn how to tune the instrument himself, and change strings too.

Yup.

He will learn how to do all that from his guitar teacher.

Good choice on the axe, I was at the music store today with my son checking out electric guitars as well. Freaky.

We checked out a bunch of Squires, some ESP stuff, he was gravitating toward some Fernandes strat copies when he looks up on the wall and sees a 1970 Thinline Tele, perfect condition, tabaco burst. Holy. Fucking. Shit. Says to me, "That one looks fine, lets get that."

"Yes son, yes it does."

:lmao:

Champagne taste, good for him. We decided to keep looking.

thats wierd that you're on the other side of the globe shopping for electric guitars with your son too. its like the bizzaro world cause you're like me, but opposite, with an outie.

I used to play in a metal band. Yeah until he learns now to play get him a small, but high quality Marshall or Peavey practice amp. You can probably get a nice one for under $100. Get him one of the cheap $100 guitars. In a couple of years, if he stays with it he can get a nicer $400-600 axe.

Yeah, kid's got good taste.

squiers a good choice for a begginer, but personlly id go with an ibanez. i forgor thename of the model- but its the cheapest one they have and it plays VERY well. alot of quality parts on it, even though its a budget line and the fret board just feels amazing. a good amp is also a must because if the sounds coming from the amp are terrible, it might discourage your son to play. however, the best choice for him would be an acoustic because once u learn acoustic u can pretty much play any guitar.

Yeah, best guitar I ever owned was an Ibanez.

Guitar players suck. ;)

First guitar I had was an old 60's model Beltone that was my fathers. He actually used to use it jam with the guys from the Guess Who back in highschool. Piece of crap had action that was almost 3/8" from the fretboard. Made my fingers bleed on more than one occasion and built up concrete callouses. lol I still have that thing kicking around the house too.

My advice is to get some cheap gear till you see how dedicated your son is to playing. If he is serious about becoming a musician, then I would perhaps consider purchasing some better equipment in the future.

Just my .02 cents.

I didnt read thru all the posts but go to www.musicyo.com I dont know about there amps but there cheapest model Kramer is awesome for the bucks--I have 2 of them. Granted I cant play them right now. Last time I checked they were $80.00 and you wont be dissapointed. The strings are right on the fret board and is easy to play and sounds good to.

^ for some reason i thought your name said "reasonably black" at a glance. i thought that was hilarious.
