I've thinking about selling insurance or doing something in the industry but don't much about it. I have some distant cousins that sell insurance and they really enjoy their work. I have a degree with a management/marketing major so what other qualifications are usually needed for entry level?

you will probably have to take a course at a professional learning center on insurance then you will have to take your state's licensing exam.

Learn what you can about the industry. Liability, subrogation, tortfeasor, all of these words will become part of your vocabulary. The entry level licensing course is easy and even the advanced ones are not bad.

if you are young this is a great place to work because you will learn more about business than almost any other industry. Insurance people touch everything - finance, legal, you nsame it, insurance deals with it. It can be boring but extremely educational.

The pay is not always super duper but you are setting yoyrself up for success later on if you are diligent and learn about business while you are there, and it may help you later on.

THE PAY IS NOT SUPER DUPER? If you are a young agent and and work hard building you book of business you can have a staff in place within 5 years and you will never have to work another day in your life. You will have to come into the Agency for a few things. The way the company works its agents that I work for you are almost forced to make $150,000 a year or you will not be an agent very long. The median earnings for our agent run about $225,000 a year. We have many agent with a million dollar book of business, however these are very agressive and hard working agents.

One of the Keys is to get as many License as possible. Life(Life pays the most compensation to the agent), Property, Auto, Commercial Auto and Commercial Property.

Do you get the license first and then try to get a job, or work there a few months learning things until you get your license. For stock brokers I know you work and they pay you a little and sponser you until you get your license. I just wondered if it was the same type of deal for insurance.

I live in a town with around 110,000 people so I don't know what my first step should be. I was thinking of just calling some of the agencies and see if they need someone. Eventually I would like to open up my own place if I liked everything.

To become and agent you have to get you license first. Many people where I work have become agents, but the majority of agent go to school and get there license before they start. At the company I am at you have to give the a sum of either $30,000 for $50,000 up front to become an exclusive agent. Most other companys will not charge anything if you have your licenses.
