I want to be strong. This sound all too obvious, but I feel like I want it in a different way. I'm not interested in shirting up and doing a maximal single, I'd rather do dips for 8 reps with 200 lbs around my waist. Or an overhead press with 250 lbs for 10 reps, for example. Or 400 x 20 squats, without even a single wrap or belt. I'm just not overly concerned with 1 rep maxes. This may change one day, but I'm just wondering if anyone else feels the same way.

I do agree with this.

To me, maxes are unimportant. . .I am more concerned about progressive resistance and breaking down muscle tissue.

There is no point for me to max out. . . a 455lb squat for 5 reps increasing to 8 reps is good enough for me as far as I am concerned.

Probably every strongman/woman on here....

Also, some powerlifters train in moderate rep ranges AND for 1 rep maxes. :)

Also Spatts, when I stated that it might change "one day," I have a feeling might come sooner than I think. In January, perhaps :D

Im bias to this. I think the only way to get stronger is to test yourself with 1RM, but I have no doubt in my mind that reps will make you stronger too.

You don't have to give up one goal to pursue another. Train for strength AND strength endurance if you want. Just customize your training. :)

I gotcha. I've actually thought about applying some Westside principles to the dip. For example, elbows-in dips could be used to strengthen the triceps while still making headway into the dip poundages. Maybe I'll invent "box dips." Employing a pause and release of tension with my knees and lower legs on some kind of platform, before going back up. This height could also be adjusted higher. 4 board dips, anyone? :D

Though I'm sure I will start to bench with your guidance (where my form has always been the shakiest) I will always love the upper-body squat.

I used to feel the same way, debaser... I just changed :)

I loved doing dips too, but now my sternum SCREAMS at me whenever I go back to them. Oh well.

Strength can be seen in many ways, a 1RM isn't really important unless you train for the 1RM.

I do believe it is a more effective way to get stronger to do 1RM's in your workout though.

I hear ya, maxing out is fun but it's maybe not the smartest thing for bodybuilding wannabes like me to be doing every month.

You mentioned 20 rep squat, I'm hoping to nail 405 x 20 in the squat by the end of next year but I can't build the strength to do it by doing high reps. You gotta get strong first, then up the reps IMO which means for me a lot of low rep work.

I just want to step onto the field and hit people so hard that they start crying. That's all I really want.

Hmm... I would really like to look more awesome rather than throwing up massive amounts of weight. I've cut my weight down lately and have been feeling more and more healthy -- perhaps my body needed a break from the heavy lifting.... I know doing reps on deadlifts @315-375 feels much better than bumping the weight up 100lbs and hitting 2-4.

Come to think about it, my rows feel much better at 225-275 rather than 315-325 -- same with squats, and other "heavy" exercises.

But hey, Nothing against 1RM's... they sure are fun to hit, nothing is more fun than releasing some indiscriminate rage onto an Olympic bar loaded to the hilt with gravity bearing steal. ;)

When I've done heavy weighted dips, it felt like something was going to tear.

As far as training goes, I like to max out, but I also like to lighten the load and really feel the muscles working. Light and explosive, Heavy and brutal, it's all good.

I agree with what Spatts says about training for both reps and 1RM. Thats more the way I like to train. I just cant find it in myself to part with 1RM's haha. For example, when I max on bench, I also like to rep out after Im done attempting the max. I do love the idea of becoming stronger on more uncommon power exercises like Incline barbell presses and Beast lifts , though =)

In Strongman...you have to be good at reps, endurance, 1RM lifts, agile, flexibile...and the list just goes on. THAt is one thing that really motivates me in this sport. The events change all the time.

I'd probably shoot myself if I had to go to every contest and do the SAME events...it would get OLD QUICK!!!!
