Anyone familiar with the restaurant business as a server?

I waited tables in college.

What happened to your pseudo personal training career?

you're going to be surprised at how hard it is ... it's not easy work

but, for a student tips > min wage gigs

I just got hired at chili's and the menu is huge so thats gonna be my main trouble, is memorizing all that shit. I am very outgoing and friendly so that wont be a problem.

Any tips that I should know about? I cant wait for the tips

Oh btw its been a while EF, how have y'all been :)

always wear a smile. be calm. sounds like you have the people skills. just dont let the customers get you upset cuz the will annoy the fuck outta you.

Dude i quit because I was only working 2 hours a week, actually I got laid off. But I was gona quit anyway, then the manager at chili's said I impressed him a lot at the interview so he hired me since he was only gonna hire 2 people, I was the third.

Any tips brah

did they give you a menu to take home and study? youd be surprised how fast youll learn that shit

Yea they did. They said we werent required to study them outside of work, but I made flash cards for a couple sections of food so far. I want to be good at this job as fast as I can because my friends fiance helped me get it and I want to make her look good, but I also want to be a good worker there.

thats good to hear. ive always felt the same way. no matter what job i had (whether it was concession stand at the movie theater or managing the call center) i always wanted to work hard and be good at what i was doing. I dunno, i guess i take my work seriously

It is very hard glad. You have to be able to take a lot of shit but people (even stupid people) sometimes. Like smurf said smile all the time and never lose your cool.

I've never served, but I have a bunch of weird ass allergies. A waiter being able to reliably relay the ingredients of a dish, or paying close attention to specific requests, is a huge thing with me. On more than one occasion I've very clearly conveyed that I am intolerant of anything made out of WHEAT to the server, and carefully gone over the menu, only to have them show up with my grilled chicken and salad and it has CROUTONS on it. Morons like that get a buck on a $75 tab, seriously.

OTOH, a server that is knowledgeable and understands how important what I'm saying and asking for is, gets a minimum of 20%.

Try to bang atleast 3 waitresess at the same time it will make work more fun when the others find out

Do you really have to know the menu all that great? I've asked for waiters opinion only once or twice and it was not at chillis.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I wont lose my cool, and the reason I want to know the menu good is so I can upsell orders, or always be descriptive when I explain whats in a certain meal. What do you guys look for in a good waiter? Smiling, understanding, and efficient?

just from knowing you on here you'll own that sorta job.
bartending should be your natural progression, chilis would be a good way
to exaggerate on a resume about serving drinks.
but an outgoing confident dude such as yourself should excel.

MM is right, pay attention to ingredients for allergy people. You can even go one further and say something like "You know, I'm not sure about the ingredients in that, let me double check with the chef".

The one thing I hate, especially at some place like chili's that has fast turnover is everyone takes orders without writing anything down. Write it down if it gets complex or there are a lot of special request. I hate when the server comes back and says, "what did you order again"

gladiator's next five years should be played out like this:
-waits tables at chillis, exaggerates this as serving drinks
-get's a bar back job at a shithole bar
-makes bartender at said shit hole, works for a while
then
bam
-bartending at a college/fratty sorta bar
making decent money, days off to lift, banging hot chics.
perfect job for those who like that life

Yea I will be writing everything down for sure, im memorizing all the abbreviations for the meals so I can write it quicker lol.

We actually have menus for all the allergies, so for wheat we would give them the menu that contains no wheat items. Pretty cool.

nice way to put it. Def gonna move to bartender after a year. Another good thing about this job is 33% of the people working there have been there for 4 years since it opened, which means he likes to keep people for a long time, so Ill really have to fuck up to get fired.

All through college i worked as a bouncer at various bars/clubs in Baltimore. Cash under the table Thursday-Sunday 9pm-3am. About $100 cash each night to hang out and have chics hit on you so they can get their friends in.

Being the bar tender is good, all the little 18yr old hotties have to make it past the bouncer in the first place to get in. Being a good looking bouncer would be a plus and you woulda been fine bro, too bad you took the job at chili's. Try to find a weekend gig as a bouncer too

You think I can be a bouncer? Im only 5'10" 200lbs.

Yeah man, that's what I was in college. As long as you look big and intimidating. We had one guy that was like 5'7" and 170, but he was a 2nd degree black belt in something (can't remember). Some guy pulled a knife on him once and he fucked him up bad. Tried to take the bar owner to court to pay for his facial surgery and shit. The 170 lbs little guy broke his face bad.

If you can roll up your sleeves and look big, you can be a bouncer. Almost everything is in your favor as a bouncer when it comes to people fighting in bars.

1) You are sober
2) You have people backing you up

You almost never loose with those odds.

And nowadays all the gangster wannabe's that have half a swerve on want to come back and earn their street cred by busting a cap at you.

And no matter how big and bad you think you are a lucky/sucker punch can ruin your day.

I'd go with the Chilli's gig (if you can't find employment that is consistent with your academic major) and network with other peeps from your college than worry about being a badass and hanging in the bar scene.

just sayin'

Well I figured he was intelligent enough to pick a bar/club to work at that has standards. I worked at a college bar that was all college kids and young girls. You didn't have hoopties rollin up and people getting out wearing their gangsta colors. The various clubs I worked at were from bouncers knowing other bouncers and they were nice trendy places trying to make a name for themselves as a quality club, VIP and guest lists, long lines out front, metal detectors, pat downs. everyone came dressed in their Cavalli jeans or Gucci suits and Brioni ties.

Use your head and seek out those places. I've been to New Orleans and I for one wouldn't work at any of the bars/clubs down there.

Wait, a second ago your 170 lb Jackie Chan buddy was disarming patrons that were trying to attack him with a knife.

Whenever you have to get physical with someone you incur a certain amount of liability, and it's not just on the club it also pertains to bouncers.

Additionally "the experience" you gain by bouncing isn't necessarily resume worthy for a future college grad ... perhaps if you intend to get into the Iron Worker's Union it would impress someone down at the union hall.

Yeah, that was once, and really the only time anything happened. I know it only takes once, but i see your point. For the most part, every place I worked as a bouncer was pretty chill. Its funny there were actually more chic fights than there were guys fighting.

It was a fun experience and not exactly resume worthy, but since you mention it, each interview I went to for my "real life" job in the IT world, every employer always asked "So what was that like working as a bouncer?" The interviewers eyes would kinda light up like I was going to tell him fight club stories or something. It might not be resume "worthy" but having it on there always got a lot of questions asked I think because most techie geeks are also bouncers in college I made for an interesting interview and I now have a great techie job making loot.

I've served food, and my experience is that 99% of the people are patient if you're honest, and say you're new, and you are writing down their order because you don't want to make a mistake. Also a tip: Check over their order when it comes up. If it's wrong, it's probably going to get blamed on you, even if you put the order in right. Last, be sure to UPDATE your customers if there's a delay! Drop by the table at least every 5 mins, check their drinks and let them know you haven't forgotten them. And as for that 1% as**oles, it doesn't matter how good a job you do, how outgoing you are, they're going to stiff you on the tip, and maybe even complain to the manager about you so they don't look bad for stiffing you. Just remember for every one of them, there are 99 good ones.

good luck with the 75.00 a night gig if ya busy! chilis your customers are dirt bag penny pinchers.. wait till ya get 10 people all wanting separate bills...lolololololol

my chic does it but works upscale and her tips range 200-500 a night she takes that home even after tipping out her chefs/bussers 42%... one person eating alone will spend 100 min.. most bills for a couple 2-300 to 1000s for a few people..

How exactly do you rob creditors? And Glad be cool brah, and take a few extra mins to get peoples orders right. I always tell these wise ass know it all kids that don't write my order down, if that shit is wrong its your ass. Be nice and take the time to be accurate and you will do great.

Oh btw its been a while EF, how have y'all been :)

I worked as a server and bartender for ten years. It's not rocket science, you'll be fine.
The main ideas are:
-Never lose your cool or get panicky
-Punch in your orders as soon as you get them, don't get in the habit of waiting to do it and doing something else.
-Know the food, order items off the menu for your dinner so you know what the stuff tastes like, people love it when you tell them what your favourite menu item is.
-Stay organized, grab a billfold with some scrap paper in it and use it to write down your tables and their orders, especially with multi course meals
-Stay on top of your tables, greet them as soon as they sit down, even if it's just a wave, smile, and hello from across the room with an "I'll be right there"
-Don't give the kitchen attitude, they will do extra nice things for you if you are extra nice to them (offering to bring them soda and water, picking up orders on time, putting substitutions on the chit and not telling them at the last minute, not freaking out on them when they are slammed)
-Always always offer add-ons like drinks, dessert, and coffee. Your job is to SELL SELL SELL, people will say yes more often than not.
-Don't talk back to customers.
The bottom line is to make a good impression, bring the food on time, and stay organized.
Oh yeah, the money...the money is great, so be generous tipping out busboys/bar runners/kitchen staff, they'll bust their butt for you if you aren't stingy. If you have a bad first couple nights, well, it'll get better in time I promise.
Just have fun with it.

It only had one gay night and I was a bartender, for fucks sake!!!

training is very very important, show up on time or early, don’t party, get good sleep so you look fresh and cheerful, I just got a job and am in training as well, it's important to really demonstrate your willingness to learn company policies, ur work, etc

Dude, with the positive attitude you have here coupled with the fact that you're a good looking kid you'll do fine at a place like chilis. If you get some polish, learn how to be confident but humble, and really learn to know food, wine, and service, you could get into a fine dining place and make 200-400/ night. When I waited tables in Park City during Sundance I was making close to 1500/ week. It's an easy way to make money and an easy way to settle into a lifestyle of making quick money and not really working hard and making something happen long term.

See, I knew you were a cocktail waitress :qt: :rainbow:

My girl is a server (well, now a manager). Shit ain't easy, I've learned. Physically demanding, some long ass hours (probably not too late at Chilis, however), deal with assholes ALL night long. The upside is that a lot of degenerates work in that industry, so if you prove that you're an intelligent hard worker you can put yourself in a good position rather easily.

I worked in fine dining for a few years and IMO it is overrated.
I had the most fun and made the most money bartending. People just throwing cash at you, trying to buy you shots, and you can let your hair down and be yourself. Like getting paid to party. You make the most money in sports bars or Irish pubs. People tend to become regulars at those kinds of bars, and they will treat you like gold if you always have their drink coming before they even have to order it from you.

Heres what I used to Do And I did Very well In that Industry in Miami.

If you have a good night dont just tip more then what is required.Hit the dishwashers w a couple bucks and That way they will help you When u are in the weeds.Grease The host/Hostess that way you get you're tables cherry picked instead of non tippin kids and Trash.Make Friends with the Kitchen from Day one especially the food runners you are gonna get hungry so why pay for food when you have all you want in the back.I worked In A Resort In Coconut Grove where the average check was 200+ per person. The whole Staff and I were like Best friends made great money and had a great time.Any further questions lMK But you have to get the noob/shoemaker job mastered quick then go to fine dining.Lie On The non corporate apps most dont check just use ur good looks and gift of gab you should do well.

No, as an ex- server/bartender I can attest to that. Not always, but sometimes, the flashiest customers are the most needy, demanding, rude, and clueless to how people generally should behave in public.
You never know who could be under that ball cap-could be Spielberg.

There are plenty of people that dress up casual, who display great class. If you need to go out w/ a jacket that's worth a couple of grand to feel important, you got problems. It's the man that makes the clothes not the clothes that makes the man.

Hear, hear

"...I say, beware of all enterprises that require new clothes, and not rather a new wearer of clothes. If there is not a new man, how can the new clothes be made to fit? If you have any enterprise before you, try it in your old clothes. All men want, not something to do with, but something to do, or rather something to be. Perhaps we should never procure a new suit, however ragged or dirty the old, until we have so conducted, so enterprised or sailed in some way, that we feel like new men in the old, and that to retain it would be like keeping new wine in old bottles..."

take care of your cooks.. not saying to give them money, but be cool to them and maybe toss them a joint or cigarettes now and then. whatever you do, never bitch at them if you want fast tickets.

C'mon, you mean you can't remember the time when you were young, had virtually no expenses other than fun, and about $125 a week sounded like a lot of money?

Ah, youth :D

i crashed and burned trying to be a server in college. good luck. just have fun. it was so tough, i never expected it to be like it was.
