Anyone ever try this for traps?

I did a set of 5 reps on 530lbs on the deadlift, and when I locked out on the last rep, I held onto the bar for as long as I could, probably around 20 seconds or so(trying to build bigger traps and do some extra forarm work as I dont use straps). I did it on all my working sets and my traps are toast today.
I wonder if doing this will cause enouhg stress on the muscle to facilitate growth

I have. It will work the traps some and give your forearms a lot of work.

It really felt great on the traps, but the funny thing is that after doing 5 rps on 530lbs, then holding it for at least another 20 seconds, my grip was still fine, it was my back that said put it down!

try some overhead shrugs

snatch grip deads hit the traps better IMO - in fact yoru whole back will scream if done right

CoolColJ, I have to stay away from any type of pressing movement to let my rotator cuff heal

I do it and I can really feel it in the traps. The difference is instead of shrugging the weight on my last rep, I roll my shoulders back and squeeze them together.

Might have to try snatch grip deads....

I'm assuming you mean you feel it in your lower traps? Or do you feel it all the way to the upper traps?
I think Im gunna give that a whirl next deadlift day

I felt it from my lower back all the way to the top of my traps. I've never been a believer that isometric stuff actually builds mass, but at the same time deads build great traps, but they dont actually work the muscle through any range of motion.

I think that you should try and make a pair of farmers walks...probably the best thing that you can do to build your upper back and traps...

They already think there is something wrong with me at my yuppie gym as I dont spend all my time lining up for the machines as everyone else does, i can imagine the looks on their faces when I started walking up and down the gym like that...I wonder if walking around with the gym's biggest dumbells, the 140's, would accomplish something close to a farmers walk?

Dbells are different than farmers. With dbells you end up putting a ton of stress on your wrists and not your hips/back/glutes/traps/grip. I highly suggest to anyone that wants to get bigger all over to make a pair of farmers. I believe that Crimson King made a pair for himself a while back...VERY cheap and out of wood. They could easily be put in the trunk of your car and carred after you train. Heck...they are good cardio if you don't go too heavy too, as you and a buddy can go back to back with lighter weights.

I am serious...they fry your traps and upper back.

When my roommate comes into the gym we grab onto some high weight dumbbells (110-120's?) and just hold on to them as long as we can... it hits your traps pretty good, and HITs your forarms like a bitchass... :) Plus, it's an easy competition to have without worrying about getting injured... the weights just drop. :)

when u do shrugs do u put your chin to your sternum? i found this helps to isolate and really hit the traps

Actually I do, I find that it helps increase the range of motion

I do this thing for my traps at the fitworks i go to and i call them noise makers...i use the hammer strength thing that you can do weighted dips on and also flat bench on...although the sissies use it for flat bench...lol...I stradle the flat bench and start out with 4 plates on each side and do sets of 15 all the way until it is maxed out, which is 8 plates on a side...by then I have to use straps cause the rubber cusiony grip gets slick, even with some chalk...I keep doing sets up 15 as I add the plates and then hit 3 sets to failure maxed out...talk about the lower and middle of the traps getting hit...I do these after the straight bar presses...but, this will not hurt any pain you may get from any pressing movements...plus since they got no collars to fit the fucking thing....dem plates bang like the fucking liberty bell...talk about sticking out like a sore thumb...plus, you can move yourself around enough while getting a grip to hit any part of the traps you want...without hurting yourself...just remember to look up or straight ahead and not down...if you do this looking down, the top of you neck by the base of your head will hurt for a few days...
