nah, but i squat, low and do them in flat shoes. plus i pulled heavy last sat. since then, i have a nasty pain right below the knee. not a muscle pain.

Shin splints you feel further down - it feels like its literally in the front of your lower leg - the shin. I have never described them as a pain directly under my knee tho - they are lower then that. They usually come from high impact compression -- e.g. running on concrete. They usually hurt just to walk on.

You might have a tendon issue.

had them frequently in high school playing soccer fall and spring

Describe the pain. Is it dull at first? Does it increase or decrease as you work out? Do you have the pain in both legs? What types of activities bring out the pain? How long has it been bothering you? Do you stretch your leg muscles on a regular basis?

If you're really concerned about it you might want to consult with a Sports Medicine Specialist. Shin splints and stress fractures have similar symptoms.

hurts when i squat down. not terribly sharp or anything, just uncomfortable, giving me the notion of a warning sign. it's the front of my shin, 3 or 4 inches from my knee cap. also, i totally blew the ass out of my khaki shorts today, squatting.

thank god you appeared
I have someone to talk to

I thought I had shin splints at one time, but it was just a case of overdeveloped calves and underdeveloped tibialis anteriors.

Try working your tibialis anterior muscles (put a 45 on your toes and lift your toes up for reps) to see if that remedies the problem.
