Anyone do straight commission work?

Taps

New member
I've been offered a job with an investment firm. I'll take home $500 a week for the first two months, and after that everything I earn will be commission only.

I was talking to the head honcho who told me the average gross is around $120,000 a year after 2 years....but the first 2 years can suck a lot of ass (he put it differently, but that's what he ment). Plus, $120/year sounds kinda high to me, but what the fuck do I know...:)

So I was wondering if there's anyone here who does straight commisssion work? What were the first few years like? How successful are you now? What were the biggest obsticles you faced?

Any input is appreciated. Thanks. :)

Yeah, I plan on talking to the other employees. It's pretty reputable firm, so I assume the people who work there have to be succuessful in some sense.

I can sell ice to an eskimo or a 18 inch rubber dildo to happyscrappy, so I'm not worred about the selling aspect at all. :)

I got lots of info.

It's hard work but rewarding if your willing to stick with it. You will quit 20 times minimum in your head and want to give up...Thats only the first month. It's alot of stress but has been done. What company is it? Because they are only paying you for the first 2 months and all comission afterwards, I'm assuming they have a higher payout with the comission..

If you are going to be selling investments or investment advice, you need your series 6 or 7 and 66 (or 63,65). I took the tests after studying for a few weeks and did pretty good on those tests...but I was a finance major. Some people not having a background in finance usually take as long as 8 weeks to study, which is about the norm. So your probably going to be studying for 8 weeks straight for all of the tests your going to take. The place i work for is all comission. No salary. They give you some money the first year...but only if you work. I had to shell out all the costs for the tests and everything myself. I even have to pay for stamps. But then again, i keep most of what I make and don't have to pay alot of comissions.

What investments will you be selling Taps?

I worked for 3 years selling commercial real estate which was great for the years i did it (80% commission).

If you believe in your ability then go for it. You need to be highly self motivated and be able to bounce back after knockbacks.

Does the company provide leads through established clients or telemarketers? Are you just a closer, or do you have to source your own sales leads too?

Is the investment product seasonal or heavily influenced by market conditions, ie real estate.

Are you selling to a particular age or social demographic, ie retirees (pension funds), high net worth individuals (equities, property) families (managed funds, residential property) etc.

Those are the sorts of questions i would be asking.

Most companies would say market to anyone, but many prefer high net worth. Although there are some companies that only take people with 7 figure bank accounts.
