When I've worked there was a shower (hospitals etc...) I've ridden up to 16 miles each way, thankfully just to wear scrubs and had the ability to shower afterwards. I do ride a roadie though. There's a ridiculous difference between riding a road bike and anything else slower/heavier/more annoying.

jd how do you feel about cross-cycles/hybrids? I won't be doing anything on the road due to bad traffic, but i'll want to much tred resistance... I'm familiar with road bikes/slicks

I really dont know a lot about that kind of bike, I have a couple year old Allez comp triple for a roadie and a 5 year old Cannondale F series for a trail bike, which I'd never dream of riding to work. I can tell you that bikeforums.com has a huge commuting section that helped me immensely. Keep in mind you'll be dealing with a lot of really elitist asshole cyclists but if you can wade through that BS you can get some good info.
