Any shot put throwers here?

I used to throw in high school and was thinking of getting back into it.

Anyone here still throw on your own time? Im going to buy a shotput and start it back up. Does anyone know if the throwing motion will help with my weight lifting? I know in throwing we usually lift to improve our throw numbers, but since im not competing anymore I was thinking of throwing just for fun and also maybe improve my lifts.
 
Quite the opposite.... weight lifting will help with the throwing motion, although both will benefit you strength wise. I threw in high school and college... as well as discus, hammer, 20lb weight and javelin.
 
I broke a 20 year old record at my high school (it's still the record now 12 years on) was selected for training by Geof Capes (WSM, 80's).

I'm not doing it anymore, but I've got some experience to share.

You will not really see much effect in your weights from throwing, more likely you'll benefit in your throw from power movements like snatch, clean, jerk, push press and kettle bell swings.
 
I threw discus and shot. I coached myself into a Div 1 scholarship. It can be done.
 
Cool didn't know there were a lot of throwers here. I'm going to throw again regardless if it helps my lifts. It was always a pleasure taking the shotput and throwing it down field. Makes you feel like a beast.
