Any serious cyclists with suggestions? Time to sell the recumbent...

Hey all, selling the windcheetah, gonna go for a new upright... too much space required to store the bent, cant put in on anyones rack to go on a day trip with another cyclist..

I love it, but its got to go...

Need two suggestions, and PLEASE remember we are talking about a 216lb male here, not 165 lbs of cyclist: squishy tail for freeride and some limitted single track and a roady (used to LOVE my cannondale r800)

Suggestions please? Gonna get my sister into it too, so we are going shopping this week for wheels. All help is good help.

cheers.

Cheffy

What's your budget? I'm partial to Trek's or Litespeed titanium frames but I can't afford any of the models I want.

I have a thread about this in the cardio forum. I have $500 from work to an outdoor sports place and would like to get into cycling for leisure and because it is yet another way I can remove myself from the prescence of others. The overwhelming thought there was that I cannot get much for 5 bones. But I am only looking for a beginner's bike, perhaps used.

they seriously should add a classified section to EF....im sure tons of bors have gym equipment collecting dust that would easily sell here....chefy your a MOD...make it happen...

killahhhh, 5 wont get you far, and quality is an expensive mistress...

I want to get the roadie for less than 2k and will hunt around for the squishy tale on eBay, something about used road frames that freak me out... not sure why...

dt, that's a great ass. don't ever change.

That's mah new baby so if it changes it'll be another pic of her. :) You can't really get a decent road bike much under $1,000. At that price you're looking at steel or aluminum frame (which I'm not a fan of for big riders), entry level Shimano 105 gearing/brakes. Carbon fiber & titanium will be out of that price range. I would look for something steel with Shimano Ultegra gears/brakes. You'll probably want to upgrade the seat - look for one with a split down the middle to ease the pressure on your nads. Pedals are an individual choice but I'd look for something like Look or recent Shimano SPD's with the big platform.

check out cannondale line up.. ton of good buys and new line up rocks.. id kill for the Six13 R5000

ALSO a good place to get a used road bike (preformance models) is check out local races and triatholons.. those places are like swap meets too.. ppl always selling great bikes for cheap...

hey bro i dunno u are into triatholons but there are certains tris that have an awsome division (225 lbs group) so a good way for a big dude to race in more of his competeive atmshphere.. DT check em too. (dunno if yo ass can swim though) :)

ive entered the Mrs Ts and did awsome in the 225 lbs (wehn i was that heavy)

i'd say look into Specialized or Trek depending on what you want to spend....

I got the roadie you see above... thats all for now... LOL... as you can imagine...

That Tarmac Pro has Dura-Ace grouppo which, although it's what I have, is overkill for you. You can save bucks by getting something with Ultegra and you won't notice the difference in shifting performance.

oh....and I would recommend some crank brothers pedals.

i just got some and I love them so far :)

Lots of people love those pedals. I use Time pedals on my bikes for now. Have 2 sets of egg beaters, 1 more set and I'm switching all my bikes.

these were my first clipless pedals, and I picked it up in about 5 minutes. they look weird, but everyone seems to love em, and no spring tensioning adjustments needed, which is awesome.

Do you have the Quartz? The straps came apart on mine...shit quality for $250 shoes. I might still get their Helium Carbon now

Cool! I thought I was about the only roadie here!! lol

I have a Cervelo R2.5 with DA10, Bontranger aeros for training and Zipp 404's for racing (tubies).

Remember, you need to make sure the bike fits properly. For example, I cannot use a trek road bike. They make the top tubes too long for me. If I size down for a shorter top tube, then the head tube is too low for me.

On the other hand, for a given head tube size, the cervelo is close to 2 cm smaller in the top tube. Specialized is similar to Cervelo I think.

Good road bikes have unfortuneatly become very expensive.
Are you able to build your own bike (as in, buy everything separate)?
Might want to check out www.gvhbikes.com for some good framesets.

Some other places like www.competitivecyclist.com have higher end stuff and offer financing.

But if you have the money and it fits, that Specialized with DA10 is a sweet bike, saw one a few weeks ago. Supposed to be a very comfortable riding bike too.

Oh, and regarding shoes, if you are planning on dropping 300+ on a pair of high end shoes, then you might want to check out custom for the ultimate fit, like rocket7's.

Cheers! :)

Funny you should mention that... i find that i can be very comfortable on a 58cm specialized where on most frames i am at 56cm max....

Oh, the Carnac Kevlars i have are from back a few years, they have the carbon soles, heels and toes... remember the blue and yellow ones? They were about $350 back in '96, still going strong. Only comp shoes i have ever had that i can go sockless in

Sweet ride! Thats the Pro tho. Will cost you over 3k american. What do you want? A stiff responsive race geometry oriented ride, or a smooth endurance oriented ride that still performs excellent and gives you a little more upright ride? If the later i'd suggest the Roubaix. I have one and it's the best feeling bike I rode in the price range. We sell the Elite for under 2k on sale. Check it out. Ride one and anything else in the price range and I gaurantee you'll pick the Roubaix.
