Does anyone have any idea what's wrong when I run my dishwasher, dirty dishwasher water with pieces of food comes up through my kitchen sink. It quickly drains however. I don't think this is supposed to happen. Does anyone have an idea of what could be wrong? Thanks for any help from you handy men or handy women.

do you have a disposal in your sink where the dishwasher drains? does this happen all the time? if so, you need a little draino. . .probably got some grease in the drain pipe that's slowing down the flow of water.

otherwise, if it only happens occassionally. . .TURN ON THE DAMN DISPOSAL AND GRIND UP THE FRIGGIN FOOD SO IT DOESN'T BACK UP THE WATER! :)

I do have a disposal but I don't use it much, maybe once a week. I'll try using it more often. I was afraid to try a liquid pipe cleaner because I didn't know if it would damage the disposal. Thanks for the advice!

nah. . .it won't hurt anything. . .also, if you're dumping bacon grease and meat products (i.e., fatty stuff) in your disposal. . .stop. . .

Is your air vent clogged? Is this a new DW install or have you had it a while?

If it's new, maybe there wasn't a vent installed. If not, maybe clogged? I'm not a pro at this.

hmmm. . .interesting. . .didn't think of that. . .but if the vent was clogged wouldn't you have some other symptoms? like sewer gas getting back into the house (p-u!) instead of going out through the vent like it's s'pose to??

Again, I'm just guessing. hopefuully someone else can chime in here.

The vent I'm referruing to is the DW plumbing vent, used solely for the draining of the DW water. I'll try and find the diagram of it.

huh. . .mine just had a drain hose that i ran over to the garbage disposal. . .the only thing that i had to be careful about was the height of where it hooked to the disposal and the length of the drain hose. . .otherwise water (dirty) can get drawn the other way (back into the dishwasher). . .

Whoa..Whoa..Whoa..HOLD IT!!!! You do not just want to go dumping drano down you're pipes. It CAN cause damage, and a lot of it too, depending on what kind of pipes you have-ABS,PVC,CAST IRON,CPVC. Lets start with that first. ABS is black in color, PVC is white, CPVC is a cream color.

Do you know the difference between an "Air Gap" and an "Air break"?

Dude, how many disclaimers do I have to write? No, I don't. I'm just guessing at this to try and help him out. I've recently read this "air gap" thing when installing my DW and thought it might have been missed with his install.

If you know the answer, tell us. lol

well in the cook world this is a problem that dont need fixing..I have seen many kitchens where this happens and gos on for years and years.its not a problem bro...your sick pipes are are acting like over flow pipes for your dishwasher...
what this mean...it means your dishwasher has to much power and water pressure for the size of the pipes it is working threw.the water is coming out the dishwasher at a volume that the size of the pipes can not handle so it over flows to the connecting sink pipes.thats all it is is a over flow and its not a big problem..if you want it fixed get bigger pipes.
trust me its not goig to make a ny problems I have seen kitchens that dump a fuck of a lot more food threw pipes and it never clogs.

OK, it's no biggie then. I rent so if my pipes break the landlord has to pay for it. I just don't want to end up with water mess on the floor.
