Any Pharmaceutical Sales Reps Here?

what do you want to know?
How they like it, what companies are the best to apply with, do you REALLY need some kind of science degree or just good experience and a BA? Curious about all of these things.

Anyone, PM me if they know anything. We need help here.

Yes, you need a degree relating.

They used to only hire hot women. (so they could talk the dr. in to prescribing their drugs)

But, now they hire hot guys. Because, the women at the front desk would not let the hot chicks in.

Seriously!!!!!!!

It's VERY competitive. They usually like to hire young, new grads. High rate of turnover. When a company's patent runs out on a drug and they have nothing new coming out of their R&D pipeline, they layoff massive amounts of ppl. Tough to break into. You'll never get in without a degree. These days they like to see science degrees, but I suppose if they couldn't find one out of the tens and tens and TENS of thousands of applicants, they would consider someone with a business degree that could sell. They train the shit out of you for their drug(s) anyway.

Oh and ATW is right, they are almost all hot young women. I was sitting in the Dr.'s office the other day for over 3 hours and saw 5 drug reps come in. 4 were hot women. 1 was an old fat guy (surprised the hell outta me). He must've been a DM and been with the company for years. He was bringing in a shit ton of food from Rubio's.

It helps to know someone, like at least as high as a hiring manager, but again without a degree these days, forget it.

Is the Real Estate thing not going as well for you as you made it out to be a few days ago in another thread? It is a tough time in RE for sure. If you and hubby are both in it, it would be good to diversify. Pharma sales isn't all glam as people seem to think it is either. The days of the fat expense accounts and taking doctors out to box seats or VIP executive suites at ball games are LOOOOONG gone. These days you're schlepping lunch into a doctor's office, clinic, or hospital...trying to get someone to listen to you as people are running in and out grabbing plates of food and paying very little attention to you. I loved it when drug reps brought lunch into the hospital. That's all it was to us...just a free lunch.

If you have more specific questions, let me know.

Lady next door is a Pharm sales rep .Yes Companies want someone with a B.S does if it is not even in the sales or medical field (think she has a B.A in fine arts ) . They just want bright educated people that can hold a conversation with doctors ,LPN's , RN's know the medications and not sound like a fool.

Even if your the best person at sales in the world you won't get a job unless you have the degree. It is the basic fact college educated people converse with each other on a different level then non college educated people.Trying to sell a product to a doctor ?You had better be pretty bright or you will get no where ,no where = no commission = bye bye

Some pay per year .you have to be good or you are out the door fast. Some pay commission don't be surprised if you work 2-3 months driving all over the place and do not earn a dime. That is why most take the flat pay for the weekly check.

Interesting. I'm just getting into sales have a huge kinesiology background, but no degree. I was planning on looking into this when I had 1-2 years under my belt and a good track record because I've heard pharma reps make incredible money and it is a pretty cushy job. From the sounds of it that's not the case anymore? I have 1 year of science (chemistry) under my belt plus a BA plus a college diploma - so would they not even look at me?

I echo the hot chick thing though. It seems like every pharma rep I meet is a woman and usually smoking hot.

I guess it depends on what you consider "incredible" money. Probably start you at $45,000 plus benefits, company car and laptop, expense account (again, NOT like it used to be), and bonus or commission plan. First year avg. maybe $65K. You get with a popular drug you'll make more. After a couple years you'll be up around $80K...again, get with a popular drug and it could be $100-120K. The benefits and retirement plans are great though. But, like I said earlier, turnover is high. Your company's patent expires and no new drug comes out of R&D...you're probably getting laid off.

not like it used to be....... far from the glory days in the 80s and 90s

That sounds like it could be as rough or worse than what we already do.

We better just keep workin the angle we already know, even if it is 7 days a week. . I guess working hard for free sometimes is just what it takes.

ExActLY!!!! Shoot, I better go buy those ladies some bamboo trees! We do this for all of our Asian clients as house warming gifts. They love it. So Feng-Shui. lol.

Wouldn't that be great if all this hard work paid off finally. I'll keep you up to date. I really don't believe in only bitchin about life but like to let ppl know when things are ok too.

My friend and his wife both worked for Glaxo. She was there 11 years and he was for 3. Before they changed the whole expense account thing, she was steadily making $150K/ yr. For the last few years she was around $90K. He was at around $60-65K. He hated it. Basically he'd go office to office all day, hoping to get a completely overworked doc or PA to listen to him for 2 minutes, and then fill up his area for the samples. He had good selling drugs too, advair, valtrex (which he said was his top seller), and imitrex. Then he'd have to go home and fill out all of his reports, which have to be very detailed since if the gov't is going to let you sell drugs, you have to track your shit perfectly. Maybe twice a week he'd bring lunch to different doc offices where he didn't get to speak to the doc or PA and the staff would take all of the food and complain about what he brought. Then once a month, he'd have his regional manager ride along and criticize him for a week and would have to go to corporate training, which he likened to brainwashing. Teamwork videos and whatnot. He hated it, but the benefits were killer and it was an ok check.

Sounds exactly like his old job Marlboro. Heh, heh, the other "good stuff". We just didn't want our kids to grow up with a bunch of tobacco memorablilia and paraphanalia around the house/garage/vehicle. Ya know?

Sounds very familar though! Except for instead of doctors it was grocery store chain owners and gas station franchises.

Outside sales can really be a pain.

I had a pharmaceutical rep come in a couple weeks back inquiring about a job. He was still employed, not being laid off or anything. I had to ask why he wanted out, he said its a filthy industry with little upside.

I dated one once, she was very attractive. from what I could tell most of her co workers were hot women too.
