Any of you softmod/overclock your graphics card?

NERD THREAD!

You know for games, 3d packages, hd editing, whatevr.

I finally got around to softmodding my ATI 3870 and love the 30% increase!! woot woot! Since a Quadro/FireGL is way too f'n expensive and not worth it.

You can use RivaTuner or N-Tune/Other Utils to do it. Obviously only die-hard gamers know what I'm talking about here. Some of you WowW addicts should google it for your video card if u spend all day on it.

You never overclock a laptop, just desktops.

I've never over clocked mine, but we did with my buddies new quad core rig

I haven't oc'd my quad, i'm running vista and it's already very sensitive I don't want to take any chances. But video card, i defiantely needed it. Hopefully 64-bit Windows 7 will open up some new options. Even tho I gotta reinstall like freaki'n 100 apps.

I just bought new memory so I can overclock it with my cpu. Fucker is sensitive as hell I'm still messing with the timings.

I wish I could afford a workstation card. I've seen a fucker with a $10g system once. Of course the guy couldn't do squat but he had cool gear! lol

Always add cooling when overclocking, if laptop add cooling pad, if desktop modify case or at least get a crappy "PCI fans card"

+1 and kinda goes without saying
If you don't know proper cooling system set ups, you shouldn't be touching shit

Hell I'd be happy with getting free hardware in general, like testing it for companies. You have to have money to burn paying sums like that for tech gear though. If you have to finance it'd be outdated before it's paid off lol.

I'm pretty nerdy and all but I really dont like overclocking... I use good components so I dont have to and am afraid to damage them due to overclocking....

i used to do it for my cpu and motherboard.....

as long as you don't go crazy with how much you increase it and get an additional fan its definetely worth it/feasible. the lifespan of computers is so short anyways might as well get your moneys worth. It might affect it 10 years down the road or so...but at that point your computer is already recycled into something else

ive overclocked my CPU 20% but anymore than that it goes unstable...its def worth it...question though if i add more ram will I be able to overclock more???

NO. How fast your RAM is is important BTW if you over clock. Budget RAM just won't do.

Money wise it's not worth fooling with this stuff. If you want play, play. I did for a while.

Graphics card oc'ing is made pretty easy these days with recent driver updates. On the cpu side it gets trickier because of the chain reaction of everything else needs to get bumped up along with it (fsb/mch voltages, memory voltage and timings, etc.) Not to mention which BIOS version best supports oc'ing if the board is more than a couple years old.
