I'm thinking about this as a potential career. I know the pay isn't great, but the benefits and the summers are definately a perk. Plus I'd like to coach. If there are any of you out there let me know how you enjoy it. Although it is gonna be kinda weird in the fall trying to feel like a figure of authority when I'm only 23. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

not a high school teacher but lots of benefits to the job.. first day there if you take a job lay the law down and intimidate the shit out of them or they will walk all over you! :)

I was a substitute teacher. Started when I was 25. They hired me as an aide later that year. TA's in Dallas start out at 30K. I've been trying to get back into it, but I don't know if I have the patience.

the benefits are great, plus 20 years and you can retire. though i probably wouldn't, it'd be nice to be able to retire at 43. however, teachers here with a bachelors start at 25k a year, add 5k for a masters, add another for a phd. In addition every year you get a 2-3% raise. definately not lucrative by any means... but with summers off I can do something else part time to pick up the slack.

My sis is a high school teacher. She loves it.

You also have to realize though that teaching means you are continuing as an adult in the only environment you really knew as a kid. The world is bigger than that sir.

You might want to look into the demand in your area. In MN the market is pretty flooded. A lot of my sister's friends have moved out of state to get teaching jobs.

She got 3 1/2 years through her teaching degree before quitting because she hated the politics so much and felt like she wasn't learning about education. She just graduated with her BA in english lit last year and now is going to school to do hair. :)

Our state is in desperate need of teachers, so much so that they've implemented an alternative certification process so that those with college degrees and without teacher certification can seek out certification as they begin to teach. This is the program that I would be going through as I never imagined I would want to teach. I've also dated a teacher (not one of mine) and do understand the politics involved. Kinda petty, but can also work in your favor if you know how to make it do so. I really appreciate all the input people.

ONLY be a teacher if your doing it for the KIDS. The money really sucks and if you don't appreciate your efforts OR the kids...you will HATE IT.

My wife was a teacher (now full time Mom) and she definetly had what it takes. I tried it on the other hand and fell on my face....and I'm glad I'm NOT doing it now.

I also coached baseball/softaball, which was VERY cool, but also very time-consuming.

Be prepared for MAJOR POLITICS...lazy administration, angry parents, vague curriculum, violent and disrepectful students and again, a paultry paycheck....no thanks.
