Any College Proffs on Here?

Feeling ill of the buisness world today.....daydreaming about my other career aspiration....being a biochem Proff.....doing tons of research...teaching for like a couple hours....telling my students I'm too busy to help them due to research....So anyone one?

Sounds good except for the too busy part... thats the kind of thing that can make a student go postal... on the other hand, great profs make the university experience worthwhile.

my dad used to be an analytical chemistry prof. now he makes more than 5 times as much doing the corporate biotech thing.

if you are okay with no money, very little appreciation, the paperwork and beurocracy of the institution, and having the stress of forced publications at a fixed rate expected of you, as well as students that tend not to appreciate you, then go for it.
do you have your phd?

no...still gots lots of schooling to go...just curious....does you dad enjoy the corporate beurocracy better than the state school (or was he at a private school) beurocracy...

The way I figure it the corporates don't know shit yet control you. In a state school...nobody knows shit, yet knowbody really controls anybody......

Most politically charged atmosphere in the world is the College Prof arena girl. I know, my father in law is a psych. prof. He has nothing but horror stories of bitching and back biting.

I taught a few semesters @ Penn, undergrad stuff, Accounting and Stats. - It's alot of work for the money.

Shags,

i think he meant UPenn as in Wharton, not Penn State as in......what are they known for again?

:-)

my dad much prefers the corporate world - but when he was teaching he said he liked it better than the corporate world. the money is likely a nice thing though. you make a whole lotta jack shit if you teach. it sucks b/c that is where we need good people, and you are more likely to get more of them if you have money to draw them in.
and he was teaching at a private school.

he will be starting his own company in a matter of months now I think. genome and proteome stuff - I'm hoping to help with it. anything to get me away from my current job that I don't like.

he already is at a mappying place, but as you well know, they are done with that shit.
now it is the proteome (sp?) that is drawing the names. protein folding.
I think he is disenchanted with the actual race to get it done (where he is now, they design microchips to do the stuff, they can do large arrays on each chip in order to get more done). I think he is more interested in cataloging and making public the data that is extracted. since my specialty is in database manipulation and getting that "to the people" we are a dynamic duo able to take on the world.

I'm not sure if he is even going to go through with it, I know he is getting lots of job offers lately. the stuff he does is cool shit though. robotics and shit. his dissertation for his phd was pretty damn cool back in the day.
