Woman is sentenced for bicyclist's death

Things like this make me so angry I can’t see straight. I want to grab this lil bitch and shake some reality into her. A young man with a long life in front of him is dead. His life has been snuffed out because this punk bitch just had to download a fucking ringtone while she was driving a car.

State’s Attorney Julia Rietz doesn’t fair much better in my eyes. I just cannot believe they couldn’t make a case for a stronger charge than “improper lane usage”. Improper lane change? WTF is that? WTF happened to involuntary manslaughter? WTF happened to vehicular manslaughter? I can’t help but think that if the victim were a pedestrian the charges would have been different. There are still too many people out there that just don’t believe cyclists have a right to share the road.

People - listen to me. Put the fucking phone down while you’re driving the car. If the call is that important pull the f*ck over and talk! Personally, I think talking using cellphones without a headset should be illegal in the U.S. I hate when people call me when i’m in the car and this is why.

This girl seems to have no remorse whatsoever for her actions. She doesn’t seem to get it or want to get it. She has a Myspace blog . I’m going to send her a message and give her a piece of my mind and if you’re a friend of mine you will do the same.

Why not ride where there is an allocated lane for cyclist. Cyclist put themselves at risk riding on the street with cars that weight 2k-9k lbs. Go run with the bulls in spain, its kinda the same thing.

1. Not all areas have bike lanes and they usually disappear suddenly; leaving you in an area w/o a bike lane. A better question is why all roads don't have bike lanes.
2. Bikes are allowed on the road, just like motorcycles. I'm pretty sure bulls aren't. Dumbest...analogy....ever.
 
brother dt while i agree with you to an extent i can drive in my car eat a meal watch a dvd and talk on my phone all the while whipping around turns and weaving in and out of traffic.. its called peripheral vision..

WE have several areas in town where the roads are 4 lanes & traffic is always heavy, downtown being one of them. Cyclists still insist on usingthese roads, even though there are alternate routes 1 minute away. And there are idiots around here that ride in the dark/dusk & wear dark clothing with no lights. Then they ride through stop signs, speed down shrouded sidewalks, etc. Not to mention riding unmarked in rain at night, or on snowy roads. Not a week goes by without someone gettin clotheslined by a car door.
I agree that the punishment should be more severe for negligence causing death, but cyclists should also be aware they don't have carte blanche when using the roads.

The analogy wasn't meant for legality. It was used for the purpose to show the simularities in size difference. Why would someone put money that could be used for schools, jails, social programs ect. on making a bunch of bike lanes that a select few would use? Dumbest....comment....ever.

I'm actually more upset at at system that didn't provide for more serious charges than I am with her. I have to hold some anger towards her because this was her FOURTH violation in the past 18 months. She obviously wasn't going to change her act without significant encouragement, and I'm not convinced this slap on the wrist will do it either. I still insist that if she hit a mother crossing a street pushing a baby carriage the charges would somehow be different.

my ex gf had 3 passengers in her car wasn't paying attention and on her phone, hit a dip flipped her car and killed one of the passengers in her car. She got off with probation.
 
Last year a female came up from Florida to see a Rockies game.

Apparently she got lost and was in a bad hurry. She ran a red light 30 miles from the stadium and fractured my hip. She couldn't have been further away from a down town stadium.

April 20th, 2005 was the date.

Got a "defective vehicle" while driving a brand new Ford Explorer from Hertz.

They have bigger fish to fry now apparently. People who consider alternative viewpoints. Instead of being called good/proper science, it is called conspiracy theorist.
 
I will probably get flamed for this but I think cell phones should be banned from cars while driving. People say they do it all the time and are just as good at driving on the phone but THEY ARE NOT!! you speed up or slow down dependant on the speed of the car next to you as a referrence point so when we are behind you you are driving like grand ma and when we try and pass you speed up. WTF? also if we are in front of you we can not seem to go fast enouhg for you (And I have one hell of a heavy foot). If we slow down you will not pass, apparently you need us as a refferrence point. If we had to slam on our brakes you would ram up our ass. I can totally tell if someone in a car is chatting on the phone or not by observing them speeding up or slowing down as cars go by, or are near them. What the hell is so damned important you have to chat all the time. Girls seem to associate the minute they get in the car that a vehicle is a giant phone booth so you imediately MUST get on the phone and call someone anyone it does not matter who. I wiss the good old days when your only phone was on your wall at home. My aunt actualy gets mad at me if she cant get a hold of me right away because I dont believe carrying a cell phone around all the time and I definately dont want to talk on it all the f&%ing time. Ohh woo Oooh I feel much better. That vent rampage has been building up inside me for I dont know how long! thanks. Now flame on !and if you are one of them I am not listening anyway or I know PM me for my cell phone number and you can call me but I doubt I will answer


Oh yeah and one more thingYou peeps that can not go to the gym without your damned cell phone I could strangle. Just looks pathetic. Take a break for a second. I bet 99% of all cell phone calls could wait for you to be done with your workout. WTF?

I admit, I talk on the cell while driving. Only yes or no answers & no more than 20ish seconds. Any longer, or more detailed & I pull over. I've seen people stop on the left shoulder of a divided highway to take a call. Remerging when traffic is doing 140 kph is insane.
I never make a call when I'm driving, & if I need to taake a call, I'll answer then hang up right away. If I don't call back after a hang up, they know I'm busy.

In this day & age when authorities are trying to convince people to find alternative transportation, there needs to be more bike lanes & paths.
 
I fucking hate cell phones, sorry, I don't see them as "means of conversation" I see them as "emergency communication only." I can't standing talking on them, I can't stand talking TO people who are on them, and I don't own one.

That being said, bicyclists:

1. While theoretically they must abide by the same rules as motor vehicles, most of them don't (hell, most of them don't even know the rules of the road).

2. I'm sorry, if someone is riding a bike down a road that doesn't have a shoulder, they're asking for trouble, particularly where the speed limit is over 25. The ultimate I've seen, a bicyclist on a relatively busy two lane but no shoulder road. That's always nice, particularly when you're stuck behind the bicyclist and it's double yellow line.

3. IMO, it should be the same rules as with boats: the big boat doesn't get out of the way of the little boat, the little boat is required to yield to the big boat, end of discussion. WHY? Because the big boat isn't as maneuverable, can't stop nearly as fast and half the time can't even SEE the fucking little boat!

Cycling on highways (interstates at least) has always been illegal. What's your point?
 
That is terrible. I'd liek to think even without her going to jail or being severely punished, she's more or less fucked her life up. People don't respect that sort of thing obviously and it should follow you around.

I hope if she is ever killed nobody gets in trouble - she is giving us the green light as it is by acting the way she is. Hypocrisy drives me nuts. You have to hope nobody takes those people seriously and that the ones who do are just as worthless.

The Brintey Spears of the world will ideally always find the Kevin Federlines and vice versa.

I understand why they put the onus on vehicle drivers, but as I was told when I was younger, "Do you wanna be right, or do you wanna be dead?".
As a cyclist, even if I have the right of way, I'll avoid a situation where i can cause an accident, or be in one

True of course, but it is dangerous competing for road space with cars, and the car always wins. Plus, as you said, some car drivers don't watch out for you.

where i come from there are a ton of stupid ass cyclists riding on highways, ones with poor shoulders or no shoulders. I see it too much..

That's my point! I enjoy biking and would do it a lot more if there were ways to do it safely where I live, but this is a relatively urban area, the only biking I will do is on designated biking trails/paths. There are just too many truly evil people out there and not enough space on the shoulders.

I'm actually slightly phobic about riding a bike on a busy road because I was almost run over by a car, I hit gravel and wiped out landing ON the white line. I heard tires squeal, and the car passed me, literally rolling over my hair. I had visions of when David Letterman used to toss the watermelons off the 10 story building. I cannot on highways to this day.
 
People in my city are very aware of cyclists, but jesus, you still have to be careful. I've seen people on bikes come bombing down canyons and cutting corners where they wouldn't be able to see if a car was coming. a) that's stupid to do because you could die. b) how would you feel if you did something like that, and the car that killed you was being driven by a guy with his kid in the car?
 
Most of you are totally missing the point. This girl drove so far off the road that she hit the guy with the LEFT side of her car. The fact that a cyclist was involved is almost irrelevant. You could have been walking down the street on the sidewalk with not a care in the world and got taken out by her dumb ass. Hell, you could have been in a car and gotten run off the road into a ditch.
Yes, some cyclists do stupid shit...as do some drivers. The fact of the matter is this guy apparently was cycling responsibly.
