I guess them white boys can fight after all. I've never believed that one race is superior to another in boxing. I watch all the old fights on ESPN Classic. It's just an inner city sport these days.

Liakhovich outpoints WBO champ Brewster
Liakhovich outpoints WBO champ Brewster

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Sergei Liakhovich won the WBO heavyweight championship in his first fight in 18 months, unanimously outpointing Lamon Brewster.

The 32-year-old Brewster, considered the more powerful puncher, instead absorbed a pounding at the hands of the taller fighter from Belarus in the 12-round bout.

After taking a left to the ribs late in the final round, Liakhovich dropped his hands and signaled for Brewster to come after him. The champion tried his best, but by then his punches had run out of steam.

"Lamon hit very hard, like a mule," said Liakhovich, who was knocked to his knees at the end of the seventh round. "Then he felt my power."

Liakhovich (23-1, 14 KOs) did serious damage in the sixth, ninth and 11th rounds, but Brewster (33-3, 29 KOs) lived up to his "Relentless" nickname by withstanding the pounding that left welts across his face.

Brewster had successfully defended his title three times after winning it in April 2004 with a fifth-round knockout of Wladimir Klitschko, the younger brother of former WBC titleholder Vitali Klitschko. This time, the 6-foot-1, 228-pounder had trouble with his bigger foe.

"You earned it, baby," Brewster said to the new champion. "We both deserve to be at the top, but you won."

The pace took its toll on both fighters, who appeared tired in the eighth and most of the ninth -- until the 6-4, 240-pound Liakhovich landed a left that sent Brewster staggering. Despite cornering the champion, who tried to cover up, Liakhovich didn't have enough left to put Brewster away.

Brewster cornered the challenger and threw several powerful punches that found their mark in the fifth round. Liakhovich not only withstood the assault, but put the champion against the ropes with a series of combinations just before the bell.

Liakhovich carried the action in the sixth round, too, as they went toe-to-toe in the center for the ring. After Brewster missed with a left, Liakhovich cornered Brewster and landed several combinations. He ran Brewster against the ropes as many in the crowd began screaming for the fight to be stopped.

Brewster's handlers worked on a cut in the champ's nose between rounds. The right-hander took more abuse early in the seventh before knocking the challenger to his knees seconds before the bell.

Liakhovich said he would "gladly" have a rematch with Brewster, but said he would really like to fight the younger Klitschko.

"He said I'm scared of him, but I am scared of nobody," Liakhovich said.

There is no one out there that is really dominating..................those fights are boring when you dont have one feared boxer like Tyson used to be in his early years. Other boxers would crap their shorts before they would step in with Tyson.............

Tyson was amazing. I think he and George Foreman probably dominated like no other fighters. I've watched many of Ali fights and he was given trouble by small slender heavyweights. He didn't win all of his fights in a convincing fashion. A few of the guys he fought, Tyson would have knocked out of the ring in round 1.

Take a look at that record and his opponents and tell me this man would have beaten Tyson in his prime? What a laugh. Ali was knocked down by a 183 lb. opponent. Jurgen Blinn a 198 lb white dude from Sweeden gave him all he could handle.

Please dont start the discussion again, about who is the best fighter of the 20th century. I dont care.

you start dumb threads, this whole place is full of dumb threads. this thread is actually interesting to alot of us. so quit your whining.

That fight was boring as hell which explains the entire HW division right now. When Vitali retired last year, the last good HW left. All the other HW's right now are fighting for the scraps left by Lewis which was then left by Vitali.

On to the more interesting divisions.

Tonight is Judah vs Mayweather. Is mayweather stepping up in weight for this fight or is it just a non title fight? Either way, I can see this being another easy fight for Mayweather even though I can't stand his punk ass. The guy on ESPN Friday night fights (can't believe I forgot his name) says he actually smells the one of the greatest upsets of all time. Judah has the foot speed to move out of the way of Mayweathers lightning fast punches plus has some power.

I'm still on the fence on whether I wanna order this PPV though as the last one with Mayweather had him totally embarrassing Gatti
