I don't agree with coddling recruits, I had a thread a while ago about giving direct commissions to unqualified canidates, at least one in particular. That being said, the largest amphibious operation ever conducted was by the army exclusively(D-day Europe). Even in the Pacific the US army conducted more amphibious operations than the marines. These operations were conducted by a largely conscript army. The army still produces better killers than WWII. In WWII 1/3 of riflemen fired their weapon in an engagement, we now achieve 90%.
