I have learned quite a bit over the past two days.
I went off on a rampage against the 'enemy'. I responded to accusations in a thread about Jesse Jackson and affirmative action, and the attack was not subtle, though not necessarily personal.
The direct attacks came via PM's, karmas, as well as posts after I tried to defend myself - not smart on my part.
What I learned (I should say 're-learned'):
That minorities, in general, experience this sort of thing all the time in the real world. But they must not defend themselves openly. I defended myself with quotes, and instead of acknowledgement of the blatant racism, I have been told that I am above it and that I should ignore it.
Well, even intelligent people get tired, and get fooled into stepping to the level of the asses that are attacking them. So I responded with sarcasm, EXPECTING TO BE UNDERSTOOD as sarcastic negativity.
Instead, I am the one being put down. No public put down of the people that FACTUALLY began this mess - just general stuff like 'we shouldn't discuss this here' threads.
It just isn't important now that I've proven my 'innocence'. I'm supposed to be above it, so I don't need acknowledgement, right?
Wrong. I do need acknowledgement. If you folks are my 'friends', I should get this acknowledgement and show of force.
This is EXACTLY what happens in real life, and why blacks, latins, whatever, are still not in positions of real power in America.
IT JUST ISN'T COOL TO SUPPORT THESE ISSUES, EVEN IF THE PERSON IS RIGHT. The minute I stopped and paid attention, responded in kind, even though I didn't hurl expletives directly at anyone, I HAVE NO CREDIBILITY.
But people here email and PM me actually believe I DO HAVE credibility. But they won't support me in a public forum.
Lesson: if you are of color/minority, you MUST ignore reality and pretend it doesn't exist to survive. This means that you must assume that people are fair, even if they don't come out publicly to say so or defend you.
You don't have to respond to this - it is MY lesson. It is MY observation. It is MY trip down reality lane.
This is why in our generation, racism will NOT be eradicated. We are all too weak and ineffectual. We are content with banter, but we won't back it up with our spines.
I am also guilty. I must never assume that I will receive public support when I am trod upon. If I am so "strong", then I should weather the storm with intelligence and ignore it all, never stopping to answer. The minute I do, _I_ am the fool.
Sound like common sense, eh? Well....imagine working at a company where you are the only minority. Imagine your boss takes unfair measures against you because of your color. Now imagine all the white people standing around, ignoring the unfair treatment, while taking it offsides and speaking to you in the lunchroom about how unfair it is, yet they do nothing to support you publicly. This is how I view what has happened at Elite on these few threads over the past two days. I am the disgruntled worker tired of the idiocy and fought back, only to watch support fall away.
What goes in real life also goes in cyberspace.
