Ambien (Zolpidem) - side effects?

SCK

New member
SOrry, this isn't an AAS-related question, but can anyone that has taken Ambien for their sleep-related problems share with me any potential side-effects for long term used?

I have been taking it for 10 days now: 10mg half an hour before I hit the bed.

Sleep has been great so far. I am loving it (and consequently becoming quite dependant on it).

Any help much appreciated.

This is the major side effect of this drug. It is very addictive. Some say that after long use you might require it to sleep.

I switched from ambien to trazadone (sp?). It is NOT addictive, and has no long term sides at all. The Doc said I could take if for years straight, then up and stop any time. I actually only take it now when I have taken a stimulant too late in the day and don't feel real tired (i.e. T-Rex)

I am very familiar and taken Ambien for quite along time. I have been off of it for about 2 months. Even 2 months later, I require "something" to help me fall asleep. Sleep while on Ambien was great, but my body did become very dependant on it, and to this today cannot fall asleep naturally. Also when the Ambien builds up long enough in your body (beyond the 7-10 Days mark) it starts staying in your system and affecting you much more than the advertised 6 - 8 hours. Some days I could not get out of bed, and got to where I needed to take 3 x 10mg just to go to sleep. Your shortterm memory will also start to fail when the build up occurs. You will most likely notice that if you take it say 2 hours before you go to bed, you probably will have no recollection of the last hour of your evening.
Becareful with it, I am no the adictive type and have never been in my life, but Ambien was the one that did it to me.

you shouldn't really take it for prolonged periods of time. meaning for more than 10 to 14 days at a time. you really dependant of it. it should really be taken as needed to create a sleep pattern only and then try and fall asleep on your own. it's a great night sleep but very addictive. try other things too...like melatonin or simple sleep (that really knocks me out) or tylenol pm (which is simple sleep plus tylenol). an occasional vallium ROCKS.

Ambien is zolpidem tartrate. It's not a benzo but it functions much like one. It's known as a non-benzodiazepine sedative hypnotic. Basically it attaches to the same receptors benzo's do and does mostly the same thing, it's just a slightly different class of drug. I found ambien to be great for a nights sleep, but I also loved klonopin. Both can be addictive and your body can become dependant on them. I had to use them on and off for 7 years now so from time to time I simply have to deal with insomnia. If you don't use it too long though you should be ok, just don't start to rely on it every night.

I've always found that anything that successfully aids sleep in any major way will build dependence over time. Even those that don't develop a physical dependence, as was the case with some, they will all develop a psychological dependency. The second you start thinking "can I fall asleep without such an such", you are going to find your natural ability to sleep has been somewhat compromised. This can happen damn fast with almost any sleep aid which is why I'm always a little wary.

Ok thanks for the response guys, but what is considered the maximum length of time to use Ambien without the dependancy effect?

I have 5 more tablets to go - that will be 17 tabs in total... Will I be expereicing any withdrawl symtoms or dependency?

I only wanted to start a new internal clock within me which is why I took it in the first place.

what is the active drug in ambien? is it a benzo?

no ambien not in benziodiapam family. newer class of sleepin pills supposedly less addictive than the former.

ambien is good at first but becomes less effective over time. after a while it will help you fall asleep but you will not be able to stay asleep for an extended time, like 6, 7, or 8 hours due to its shorter half life.

i gave up on ambien. hated that feeling of waking up a 4AM tired as could be but unable to get back to sleep. i have said it before, forget the sleeping aids. the best sleep is natural. peace of mind best sedative.
