Am i dieting wrong? Plz help.

wannabcut

New member
I have been following a low carb diet for a couple of months now and I was wondering if I am taking in too much protein.

My main motivation for dieting right now is weight loss. I am 237 lbs and I have high blood pressure which is currently controlled via medication, i am only 18.
I have already lost aprx. 13 lbs with this diet.

For supplements I am taking GNC's vita pak, witch contains 2 mega men, 1 mens ginseng formula capsule, 1 mens vitality tablet, and 1 mens saw palmetto formula tablet.

For breakfast I have my protein shake witch is 40g(2 scoops) of protein.
I use the shake as a meal replacement because I hate eating in the morning.
The brand I use is Release Amplify .

For lunch I usually have a can of sams premium chicken breast in water. I usually add some mayo and some bbq sauce in it, it taste gross plain.
That is 75g of protein.

For dinner I usually have a couple of chicken breasts :yum: and I usually dip it in ketchup, also I have some greens beans or some corn and maybe some brown rice.

So at the end of the day my intake is as follows:

Carbs: aprx 50-70g
protein: aprx 150-250g
water, aprx 16.9oz(bottled water) every 1-2 hrs.
That's it, i dont chew gum or drink soda or anything like that.

Honestly, i dont exercise much but i am working on that.

My main question here is am I taking too much protein, my main food is chicken witch I know is a good source of protein.
But am I eating too much?

My other question is do you recommend that I add anything else to my diet?

Any help would be appreciated.

thx

Exactly what I was thinking.......100% impossible to even function on that kind of diet.........I wish people would post what they REALLY eat during the day when they ask for help.............no way to offer up suggestions, when they omit key snacking.............

actually he is eating 3 meals per so that's not that hard to believe.. even though the cals are low.. I had girlfriends that ate once or twice per day before it's just what you are used to.. my dad weighs 210 lbs. at 5'10", has a little gut but he only eats twice/day haha

but in his summary he is missing the calories from the mayo and bbq sauce and yeah I'm sure there are some other little things in there he left out,

mainly what you need to know is that he needs to add EFA's (essential fatty acids) to your diet, add another 2-3 meals during the day, and start exercising more :) otherwise you will plateau in your weight loss pretty quickly and/or lost even more muscle pretty fast wannabcut!

It's very hard to beleive....I'll put my house on it that he (AND YOU DAD) snack in some way other than 2-3 meals............Also, when you do only eat that infrequently, your body hoards body fat as it slips into starvation mode. It's an incredible smart machine and holds onto anything it can if it thinks you might be starving..............hence the reason you don't lose weight (OR HAVE A TUMMY IN YOUR DAD'S CASE)))))))))))

I think you have been in bodybuilding world too long! there are thousands of lean people out there with regular metabolisms who eat 3 meals per day! it's normal

but to be REALLY lean/cut or REALLY muscular like we want to be, or to get results FASTEST, we have to go to extremes and eat every 2-3 hours.

I agree with you though 2 meals per day is pushing it and 1 meal per day is ridiculous.

yeah my dad also has a tummy cause of the 5 double vodka tonics he has when he gest home lol

Its not that hard to believe, actually... I weighed at one time about 290 or so with probably about 28% bodyfat (I don't actually know, it was somewhere between 26 and 30%). I didn't know how to diet properly, and so I pretty much starved myself. Or at least, what I considered starving, which was any where from 800-1400 kcals a day (usually 1200). I could survive off of 800 for a few days, believe it or not, WITH working out. It SUCKED and I was CONSTANTLY sore off of 800 kcals. So 1200 was the norm, because I could actually recover somewhat.

However, I learned that such a low caloric intake was REALLY bad. I still dropped 50-60lbs. I know I lost some muscle mass, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been because I still lifted hard and got a lot of protein.

Actually you are incorrect...........their metabolisms are not NORMAL......the caolic intake is = to the outtake (energy) and therefore they weight stays steady.........however, when you calcualte BMI or copare their muscle tone to their bodyweight, many fall into the overweight category..........granted the BMI is a useless tool for the bodybuilding world, but for the average person, it works............

Why do you think we are the most obese county in the world?????????

THis is it and then I'm done with this post..............when you are that FAT, you could lie in bed all day, eat 800 cals, and lose weight........wasnt my point, but I can't explain it any other way..............do whatever works.......

I think he means that its normal for people to eat 3x per day... not their metabolisms...

Maybe I'm being overly technical, but....

There is no "normal" for metabolism. Metabolic rate is highly dependant upon the individual, their genetics, eating habits, etc etc, so there will not really be a norm. You could get away with talking about relative speeds of metabolism (slow, fast metabolisms), but talking about a "normal" metabolism is conceptually incorrect. We're talking about apples and oranges here.

Please keep in mind that I am no dieting expert, but I can share with you my own experience. I lost a great deal of fat by doing a strict Atkins diet. In fact, I lost close to 30 lbs in 2 1/2 months, along with weight lifting and some cardio. I like this diet because you can see the results fast. I lost almost 10 lbs in the first week. I think it works really well when you have a high bf. For me it seems to get tougher as my body fat decreases. For at least the first two weeks you keep your carb intake below 20 grams a day. On your second or third day you get fatigued, but it passes as the body begins to burn fat for energy. (This is my understanding of what happens anyway). After the second week, according to the Atkins plan, you can increase your carb increase according to whether you want to continue to lose weight or just maintain what you lost. I kept it strict for the full 2 1/2 months.

I am telling you, for me the weight/fat loss was fantastic.

i swear that is all i am eating, just a shit load of chickin with different flavors.

after a while on low carbs your t4-t3 conversion slows down and weight loss begins to dwindle. After about a week or 2 you may want to up carbs for a day (refeed to keep body going). MARK MY WORDS WITH LOW CARB DIETING PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BE SUFFEREING ALOT OF THYROID PROBLEMS AND NOT KNOWING IT !! IT HAPPENED TO ME BUT MINE WAS BECAUSE OF EXTRA ADDED STRESS THAT SPEED ME UP BY 30%. I did everything I normally did but stress was a very powerful factor which lead to pituitary shut down

eh, I've gone weeks with 800-1000 calories a day with working out and cardio.. it sucks but it's not impossible. As far as that dude who posted, if that's a low carb diet, you need to work on that man. Ketchup, corn, bbq sauce, rice.. all carbs. Maybe you should look into 5 or 6 smaller "normal" meals (as previously mentioned) and start adding in some light cardio, walking 20 minutes a day, stuff like that.. you can work up to working out and running..

What sort of foods contain efa's. Also i have a pretty good amount of muscle and i dont want to lose it, what can i do to prevent muscle loss.

So you are saying eat less carbs correct? I was shooting for around 50g a day, is that too much?

Can you give some recommendations as to what to eat on a refeed day, as far as carb count and calorie count, etc.

I did some research on efa's and came up with this
. Do u think that that would be a good supplament to add to my diet? Now i also read up on flaxseed oil, and while the gnc multi-oil supplament says basicly that what is in it is a derivitive of flaxseed, would that be the same as taking flaxseed itself in a sperate form?

that link doesn't work for me.. but..
"good fats" are

raw nuts
all natural peanut butter
olive oil
flax seeds/oil
fish oil

stuff like that

and what brandonxj was saying isn't to eat LESS carbs.. he was saying to eat different ones. like oatmeal, brown rice, beans, etc...

if you don't want to lose your muscle but you want to lose weight, you have to keep protein intake high, but not cut calories so low that you are losing more than 1-2 lbs. per week. if you are losing more than 2 lbs. per week almost certainly some of it is muscle. you also have to workout obviously.

eat more and get rid of the mayo

add a 1 TSP with every meal except post workout meal where you need to add in some carbs like 50-75% of tota carbs if on low carb diet should be taken then . Even on off days carbs still should be consumed but can be reduced an moved to the first few meals of the day.
