his ankle, fibula(shin), and patela(knee) are broken they have him first on 5mg hydrocodone/ 500 tylenol....

now on 10mg hydro/ 500 tylenol......the pain is bad enough where he is taking 2 10mgs every 2 hours...... so thats 1000mgs of tylenol every 2 hours......will the tylenol cause problems?

and are there any alternative painkillers he can request?

Ya..if i was him i would talk to my doc. That much tylenol over a period of time is not good for your liver.

there are tons of other pain killers out there

Def way to much tylenol. It is liver toxic.

Def way to much tylenol. It is liver toxic. Do not stay on that dose. There are a lot of other pain meds that are a lot less toxic. Morphine is actually a good choice. It just has a bad rep due to it's abuse potential. It is actually one of the least toxic pain meds.

Best pain med of all - Advil. 600mg works better than morphine.

Ok, at 4 grams / day you will see liver enzyme elevations with Tylenol. At 1G every 2 hours, thats 12G/day. Too much!

For post traumatic acute pain, he needs a stronger, single entity opiate. Ask for something like single entity oxycodone (Roxicodone), or immediate release morphine. Did his doc prescribe the fixed combination hydrocodone? He was probably trying to get away with writing a CIII. He needs to step up to a good CII. If he won't write it, find a new doc.

With all due respect SofaGeorge, Advil will not work better than morphine for this type of pain. For certain types of inflammatory pain it might, but not this. If you ever end up dying in a hospice with bone cancer, see if Advil will get you through. You'll be wimpering for a good morphine drip in no time.
