I have my undergrad in Engineering...I really want to break out...not sure if I want to go into more of a sales engineer position....applications engineer position...or just obtain the MBA to be more marketable to a wider range of companies and products. I'd also like to gain some real world experience to expand on some of my own business ideas.

So............

do you think the MBA will help me accomplish this..at least to get a foot into the door. I'm a firm believer that it is more of who you know than what you know....but my industry contacts are few. I'm in a very specialized industy, and feel pigeon-holed.

Also...............

What area would you suggest? Management?

my undergrad and grad degree is in engineering. I am doing my MBA now. Will be done in December. Concentrate on finance. It's fun and will open doors for you specially if you want to change careers.

I got a friend that stopped at bachelors in engineering(mechanical), and my salary is equate to his when Im layed off for 6 months. Figuring that in with the whole year that is.

I went out for Mexican last night, and when I came home I took a fiery dump. 4 MBAs came out.

That's the approx value of the degree.

If you are only chasing the money, go to a top 5 school.

Otherwise, tomorrow, I'll scrape oput my urinary tract infection, get a few more MBAs for you and you can have one.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, because I have neither a BA or an mba, and am trying to get my own thing going.

Those degrees mean precisely jack shit.

Someone wil undoubtedly post that MBAs make more money than non MBAs. It;s as relevant as saying professional athletes make more money than non-professional atheltes.

Education is not power. Knowledge is. and it comes from anywhere.

the idea of going to school to learn about business makes as much sense as using a violin to predct the weather.

while I agree that experience is most important in MOSt fields, having an MBA with that experience is even better. I know in my field, sports business, experience is king, but, I have seen several higher level positions that require a master's degree. You just have to have an understanding of your industry and what it demands of a person.

Matt is a very smart man. Listen to what he says, because I agree completely.

Let's hear from you MBAs out there that didn't get a significant pay raise and or have it open doors for you - otherwise shut the fuck up. If the masters and doctorate degrees were worthless, why would anyone go through the effort of attaining one?

If you want to get a high paying job like a Chief Information Officer, Chief Technical Officer, VP - Information Systems, IS Director you will probably be required to have a masters degree bc the competition is high for those jobs. Everything that sets you apart helps.
