Dude, what you should do is have Klu look out for you and you step into one of those giant refridgerators and drop that duece there. Then everyone that opens the door later will get a nice surprise.

well i hope this dont sound racist but i play colored yahtzee

Yahtzeee! I'll play with ya sometime Klu.

Kills, what's wrong with a dell. I've had mine for 5 yrs & the only probs I've ever had were the fans. The sumbitch isn't very upgradeable though.

Thats my point and you cant do anything to the bios to overclock if you like gameing. They lock out features in the bios so you cant mess it up. Most P.C s dont run at what they say they are just for safety reason's, and in the bios you can bump them up so that they can run faster.

Those numbers are rarely exactly correct, but never should be off that much. I'd be pissed.

Let us know how it turns out.

If Hammy never posts again, we will know that Klu wandered off and forgot to open the refridge door for him.

Yea, the available memory will never exactly what it lists, but those numbers are way too low for the listed values.

Mm, I don't do much gaming so it's mainly irrelevant for me. But I could only upgrade the ram to 512mb & if I want a new hard drive, it has to be external.

mine is 1 Ghz & actually says something like 996Mhz, no big deal. 20 Gb H.D. actually reads 18.5.

Does the motherboard have on-chip graphics rather than having a separate, dedicated plug-in graphics card? Some motherboards use your main memory as graphics memory and that would account for the apparent lack.

If you have a grahics card from the other machine? You might be able to plug it in and have the missing memory magically reappear but it's likely that you'd have to fiddle around in the bios and I wouldn't recommend that.

Don't look at numbers that are likely to distress you. It's bad for your cortisol levels.

Just what I was thinking.... specially since the number of "missing" MB of ram is exactly 128Mb... (nice power of 2)...

Look for the key words Hammy " 128Mb Video SHARED memory"

as for the HD difference? easy... 250Gb is the capacity unformated... when you partition, format, etc, some space is lost in what is technically known as "overhead"

Even with computers, usage of resources is not 100% effective (but rejoice, it was much worse, you should have seen the wasted space on a FAT16 partition).

Actually, he probably has been ripped-off with the HD but even a class-action suit won't help.

A megabyte is 1024x1024 bytes, A Gigabyte is 1024 times that. Most HD manufacturers report 1000x1000x1000 as a gigabyte and blame the nerds for making up silly numbers. Windows will report actual (1024-based) Gigabytes while the HD will claim the value from cut-price (1000-based) ones since it'll come out to be a bigger number for any given amount of drive space.

As Pintoca mentions, formatting eats up a chunk of it too and, anyway, the whole hard drive isn't used even then since lots of spare space gets included with every file that you put onto it.

post thebrand/model of the doggone computer... if it is a dell, post the service code (it is a sticker underneath)... with it, I can look up the specs and will tell you what is going on.

if it has "Shared video memory" it means it uses your RAM for video, instead of the video-system providing its own memory.

ok will do later, as you can see im busy at work so i will do it when i get home

i hate computers, my 1st comp died on me i guess some thing happened to the hard drive or what ever and it wouldnt work at all.....my 2 comp wont hook up to the dang router......this one seems to be ok so far....i know nothing about them

I'm amazed how router has become a maintstream tetm nowadays... this is a social phenomen... back in 96 only the über-geek knew what a router was

Five years ago, I thought I was the shiznit because I built a router out of an old 486, 3 3com 3c509 network cards, 12Mram and a linux floppy distro with a firewall, and a DMZ.

Today, all that, a wireless connection, a better firewall, fits in a much smaller footprint, requiring 1/100 the power and costs about $50.

Ok heres what bestbuy said about the memory and the harddrive and tell me if he blew smoke up my butt
with the memory-it has an integrated video card and shared memory(like i know what that shit means)and i guess it takes from the memory

also with the hard drive it has a pertition made with windows stuff and its in its own seperate area in the hard drive and i guess it takes up all that hard drive
true or false?

Easy enough to verify.

Go to Control Panel |Administrative tools |Computer Management

Double click on storage in the right hand box. Go to the Disk Management (local) snap-in. Down at the bottom it lists the hard disks and thier actual sizes.

The shared memory is common place, but I'd be pissed about it, because it's so cheesy for someone coming from a hardcore gaming background.

they put windows OS on a separate partition? That would probably be alright. They used a big partition for windows then...

And the new vid cards are now leaching off system memory so that makes sense...

I'd stay away from best buy, there's nothing in there that you couldnt find cheaper online.

you two are online 23.2/7 (quickies and food account for that 0.8 hours not online).

yeah Klu, do all that and report your findings...

Klu, I think you should take the case apart while hammys at work and take a picture, I'd also pull out the graphics card just to make sure they actually have what they say they have in there.

:verygood:

actually IMO i think its false advertisement also with them saying it had all that memory when it really doesn't
Im sure someone has called them before and they bumfuzzled around with all that

i looked but ill let him post it up when he comes home. and yessss i read your response and ty :bigkiss:
and kb and stilletto bite me i wanted to know what the hell he was talking about and if it was true so i could call back and bitch
I hate listening to mumbo jumbo because i dont know wht the hell they are talking about :fanger:

its not false advertisement... all they say it has it is in there... it is HOW and WHAT for is used what makes the difference

it is when you dont know what partitions for windows are

They're a bunch of bamboozlers.

I doubt very much they make any point of advertising that you lose an eighth of your memory because they think they can get away with not giving you a graphics card and take away some of your drive space to save giving you a Windows CD.

What kinda damn computer is this?

1024 is probably accurate. Four 256MB sticks (or two 512's) would be 1024. I have no idea what combo would get you 896MB but it sounds more like how much memory is available.

fdisk /mbr

You know it makes sense.

I think we've resolved the missing 128MB out of 1024 to be shared video ram.

I don't think Dell is avaliable at outlets.

Sony, HP, Compaq, Gateway and a few others.

Pffttt..... A E-machine!?!?!? No wonder it's fuckin up already.

If you buy the shittiest brand on the market you should expect to get the shittiest product.

E-machines are low-end garbage. Seriously, just take the whole thing back....spend a few more bux and get something respectable.....
