alopecia areata

Anyone else on the forums have alopecia areata? I have had it two times now, two spots on the back of my head two years ago and now two spots same area. I have had the Steroid shots too make the hair grow back in the past but now im worried it wont grow back. Just seeing if anyone else on here has had experience with this before and what they had done to make the hair grow back.

Thanks

I had it before, right after I got out of the hospital. It's my understanding that when your body is going through periods of extreme stress that could be a possible cause.

Mine grew back after 2-3 months. It was right on the back of my head.

i got it in my beard area twice - 1st time was real noticable, 2nd time i prolly only noticed because i was looking out for it it was so mild - it grew back both times

both times it was at end of long var cycles. imo could have been a few things;

1) got real lean which is real stressful on the body and occurance is associated with stress and/or

2) var is an potent anticatabolic, which means it fights the effects of cortisol (which is anti-inflamatory) - the mechanism of hair death in aa is inflamation - and they give cortisone shots (basically injectable cortisol) to help the hair grow back. do the math lol. both times it was right where I would rest my chin on my hand when working at a desk. perhaps that constant pressure, without the bodies natural cortisol based antiinflamatory response caused enough local inflamation to trigger the AA at that site.

when i tried to discuss with the dermatologist the mechanics so I could try to avoid it happening again, he basically was like "i dont know, just take the shots and it'll probably grow back" I love docs.

havent had it i about 2 years so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I got it really really really really really bad!!! Later found out that it was due to my thyroid being hyperactive. After getting that treated, all is a-okay. Good luck and don't worry, the shots always work.

OK, Gentleman, here is some advice from a former Cosmetologist / Hair Dresser who also just so happen to have had Gastric ByPass ... As the vast majority of Gastric ByPass Patients tend to experience some loss of hair & or thinning anywhere from 3 to 6 months post-op and others as late as 9 months post op, so, I do know what I am speaking about.

The major contribute to this or any form of ALOPECIA has mostly to do with not getting enough protein. Iron levels are also a contributing factor. A malfunctioning Thyroid Gland, as mention in another post can also add to the dilemma. Stress can also contribute to this problem. Taking an Iron supplements and a good Vitamin B Complex will also be helpful in helping your hair to grow back !

I would also avoid the following: blow drying, permanent waving, & coloring your already weaken hair folicals and try towel drying instead.

Well I got the shots 6 weeks ago today, and still no growth. Im keeping my fingers crossed.

When it first starts growing back, it comes in really fine. So you may not even notice it at first. I'm confident that you'll come out with a mop on your head in the end. Good luck bro.

Well I decided to post an update on my Alopecia Areata. 85% of the hair on my head is gone, I now have to shave my head to the skin to make it look as normal as possible. I have been taking a multi vitamin, B-complex vitamin, Zinc and every now and then the steroid injections. Anyone have some suggestions?

well thanks for the update and I'll bump this for someone else.

good luck man

did the doc have anything to say?

I have been to four doctors about my Alopecia, three dermatologists and one GP. They all recommend steroid shots or nothing. Its such a frustrating condition and they still dont know what causes it.

Are you sure it isn't just rapid male pattern baldness?

Im sure, Its like I have a map of the world on my head, its just big bald spots in random places on my head. I even have two spots on my chin.

yeah it sux - I have a thick beard so when I got it in the beard area it looked HORRIBLE no matter how close I tried to shave. no relapse tho, thankfully.

SS there's often just spontaneous remission even after a long period of active AA
