It seems that when I am doing larger than normal (even though not as large as Sumo) DL and squat it preserves my knees

Have you ever notice that ?

yeah. it similar to how box squats do as well. you have alot more ham and glute activity, less ankle bend and your shins stay vertical. thats the key to saving your knees.
