allergic to bread?

New member
I'm finding a correlation between when I have bread with my meals in the afternoon, and feeling ill and bloated (and also somewhat windy, betcha wanted to to know that). Doesn't happen wth brown rice.

However, small amounts of wheat flour in things don't have the same effect.

So I don't think it's an allergy - is this kind of thing possible? Where only large amounts (eg 1 pita or more as opposed to teaspoon of flour) cause a problem?

SKipped training again coz I felt too ill and crappy to go..

I don't think it may be an allergy, rather I would say that your loading yourself with too many carbs in the afternoon would make you feel bloated at some point...

nikkita could have a point. whenever i eat certain things (breads/pastas) i feel like i'm ready for a nap. my belly feels huge and it's time for me to go nite nite.

'sfunny, brown rice does not make me feel ill like that tho... afaik it's not gluten - porridge contains gluten and doesn't amke me feel like that. It isn't the tiredness of a full stomach, it's a "sick and bloated" feeling, I wasn't that tired, but felt that if I workde out, I would upchuck. Anyway I'll stick to the brown rice for the moment. Going to try tofu with harissa sauce tomorrow...

I don't think food allergies are related to the AMOUNT of the food you eat. If you were allergic to wheat proteins, you'd have a reaction whether you ate half a slice or the whole loaf. Sleepiness doesn't sound like an allergic reaction. An allergic reaction involves the immune system.

I found this description of symptoms of a wheat allergy: The more common symptoms involve the skin (urticaria, atopic eczema, angioedema) gastrointestinal tract (oral allergy syndrome, abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting) and the respiratory tract (asthma or allergic rhinitis).

Actually some are related to the amount. If I eat too much dairy my calves itch. I'm okay with like a serving of cottage cheese a day, if I try to eat it for every meal I itch like crazy.

Same with pizza, ice cream, etc. A little and I'm okay a ton and I'm in agony.

My Aunt's family has problems with gluten allergies-- my little cousins have too. They've had good results with going on gluten-free diets for 4-6 months. They slowly introduce gluten back into their diets and don't have problems with it. It's a hard allergy for little ones. It's difficult to tell a 3 year old that they can't have a cookie etc.....but now the kids are able to eat wheat etc without adverse reactions.

realised it must be due to carb overloading at the wrong times. I guess bread has so many carb cals and higher GI than brown rice.

Had pizza for lunch today, feel fine, so no allergy/intolerance. Thansk for your input folks, I'm afraid I am neurotic about my diet, worrying if it is healthy enough. I really appreciate all the good advice I've had on this board.
