Alcohol's effect on growth

How negative is it. IM on a 5x5 in my 2nd week and I think im up about 3 lbs already just from eating like a HORSE. But I do go out on fridays and saturdays and drink..... sometimes alot. However i always make surei get an extra long sleep (like 14 hours sometimes) becuzi know that you dont get the same sleep when ur drunk as when ur sober. I also dont workout the next day so it doesnt effect my lifts in that manner.

if its that detrimental i can try to keep it down but I am at psu and i am loving it. but priorities are priorities are mass then partying (at least for this 5x5, im hoping and seeing that this training cycle could definately be a big transformation) so I will cut it down if its that detrimental. Let me know big dawggsss

I rarely drink, but I'm 27 and I went to college already and I certainly drank my share in the past....moderation was always the key word for me, and I never let drinking interfere with workouts......of course it is terrible for your body, nobody will deny that.......but, you're at college and these are fun years......I'd suggest you cut it to once a week, maybe have a few one of the weekend nights and make sure you don't get out of control BOTH nights......honestly, there is no reason to get drunk during the week, college years or not, I always liked walking into parties in college and being more jacked than 98% or the people there 98% of the time, and it was because I was eating, sleeping, lifting, and studying 5 nights a week, and fucking around once or twice a week, rather than just the opposite.....so my advice is keep it to Fri and Sat and keep it under control one of the 2 nights, and you'll be fine.

Are you born and raised in PA?

Sorry to be a buzzkill, but I come from an extreme alcoholic family. My father is a recovering one, but both his brothers have passed away already from it. Please try to find some other way to have fun at your parties without getting piss drunk. I agree with BiggT, in that partying a few nights a month isn't TOO bad, but making it a habit every week will just lead to problems.

As far as affecting your gains, just know that ANY alcohol in your system completely shuts down your liver until it is all processed. Each ounce of liquor/beer takes around 1 hour to digest, and is pure empty calories.

biggt spoke like true vet.

you can always find at least one reason to stay in one weekend out of the month. there goes a 1/4 of your worries.

otherwise, if you aint worried about losing ungodly amounts of fat (as noted above, fat burning halts completely) and aren't on 50mg dbol a day, drink one for me......i haven't drank in 3 weeks, but i'm about to go have one myself.....lord knows i better watch myself for the a&m game tomorrow.....

enjoy

s8, sorry to hear about your losses

I grew up in pittsburgh, so yea, from pittsburhg to psu. I dont drink during the week, but friday and saturday is a must

I went to uni here in the UK and I have to say I drank pretty much all the time. Didn't do me any favours but I wasn't interested in lifting at the time. now that i am i try to tone it down to once every 2 weeks.

FWIW, alcohol supposedly interferes with absorption of nutrients & minerals.
I remember reading something about destorying one's nitrogen retention as well. Decreases protein synthesis... does all sorts of stuff.

I will enjoy a few from time to time... and if I go overboard, I pay for it the next day...it's natures way of saying.. "you've done drank yourself stoopid...ya idiot" lol

Moderation is key. On a cutting diet though... SEVERLY inhibits one's goals (well at least mine)...because I get the muchies and eat everything I can get my hands on.

It's on a very individual level... too many factors. I know some REALLY skinny heavy drinkers... and I know some very large occasional drinkers... both are lazy and both eat a shitload... totally different metabolisms.

Oh and one still has decent about of LBM... bastard.

ANOTHER side of the issue is: health. Is it healthy? ... that's for you to deceid (SP?!...wow, the longer I'm on EF the worst my spelling gets  ).

:) Just some tid bits to ponder.

I love me a frosty Newcastle though :D

I am 21 and in college my senior year...I have some experience here. I use to drink heavily and it did alter my training, made me weak and workouts were pathetic, but now I stick the Alcoholic recovering method...REDBULL...diet REDBULL, no calories and I get so freaking hyped...i was never a downer person, uppers baby...try it one night...have two redbulls with a diet soda or something...when you finally fall asleep you wake up 12 hours later ready to work out.

I agree with the othe rmembers, my fatehr has Hepatitis "C" from a Tattoo needle, so he can't drink. He taught me growing up that you don't need alcohol and I respect him for that decision, it has prolonged his life and mine. Not offended anyoen that does drink bec i have myself, but I respect a person much more because it is harder to have fun with out it at first, but now I can hang out in a bar with a redbull and love it, and sometimes I am the one beating the piss out of the drunk cockheads cause i am wirey, they don't even knwo what hits them...lol...

***I do not approve any of my actions***

Everything that you do will affect your gains.

If having a little fun on the weekends helps you mentally more than it hurts you...then go for it.

I normally have a beer every Friday night.

Whats the final word on how the calories are used?? It is my understanding that alcohol's calories/carbs are not stored as glycogen that can be used as fuel, but rather as a fatty acid, making them truly emtpy, useless calories.....can somebody correct me if I'm wrong, or elaborate a little on that, I've always used it as an argument when somebody says alcohol is just an 'expensive carb'.

Unless you are dieting...why worry about a beer or two?

Aronld drank a pitch of beer for lunch every day. Didn't seem to hurt him. I don't believe a little beer and wine will have a bad effect on you. 20 beers in one night will.

The more Yoked I get the more Alcohal has no place in my diet.

I think its good to go out and live it up a handfull of tiems a year though

Quoting from Wikipedia's "Effects of Alcohol on the Body" Article:
The liver breaks down alcohols into acetaldehyde, and then into acetic acid by the enzyme acetaldehyde dehydrogenase. Next, the acetate is converted into fats or carbon dioxide and water. The fats are mostly deposited locally which leads to the characteristic "beer belly".

As far as I know, monosaccharides' or polysaccharides' raising of insulin after digestion activates phosphoprotein phoshatase, which is used in glycogenesis. Ethanol's metabolization uses different reactions than regular carbs so its very unlikely that it's gonna be converted to glycogen.

Definitely stay away on days you lift. I know if im going out some night I will reschedule my lifting days ( or vice versa ). You would probably be better off not working out and doing some cardio if you plan on drinking heavy that night.

I was told by some physicians that alcohol consumption decreases test levels and increases estrogen levels in males also. Makes sense when looking at most alcoholics because they develope female like fatty deposits.

I used to drink a lot when I was out of shape and ultra fat...

Then I just kinda lost all want to get fucked up when I was working out in the morning...I like my arms burning like a bitch more than I do getting plowed and making jewish jokes to cops with a quart of tequila in the trunk. :P
