What about the guy who rarely drinks, but has one to many at the office Christmas party, pulled over and gets a DUI. It has interfered with his life, but I wouldn't call him an alcoholic.

It doesn't matter. The only time you're not an alcoholic is that you don't drink at all. There is no "good" or "bad" alcoholic. Alcoholic is someone who likes to drink, regardless of how much they drink.
you only drink a glass of wine per week? You're alcoholic. Only a six-pack on the weekend? Alcoholic. It's amusing how people label other people "alcoholics" when they also drink. Sorry, no gray areas for me.

Give me a break. I think your view is a little extreme. That might be your "personal" opinion, but that is not what an alcoholic is.

Not...

Extreme? No, I was trying to be simple, if there is such a thing. Why is alcoholic considered in a negative sense? I'll try to be clear again. When I made the original statement, I was trying to be stoic.
What's the difference between a person who enjoys a six-pack on the weekend and a person who constantly drink everyday? To me? None. They both like to drink. Sure, the person who drinks often may end up destroying his/her life. But when you drink to enjoy the alcoholic beverage, you are trying to pleasure yourself by gaining a "buzz", am I right or not? For some, it may only take few beers. For some, it may take a gallon of vodka. What do they all have in common? They're trying to take a part in the process of chemical balance that cause them to feel "good".
You don't want to be labeled as an alcoholic? Don't drink at all.

02gixxersix said:I'm not saying people are powerless to control their drinking problem. I'm saying that people are powerless to control alcoholism. It's a disease that is with you from birth. Like I stated you could never touch a drink in your life and be an alcoholic. Just because someone drinks a lots doesn't make them an alcoholic either. You could be dependent on alcohol and not be an alcoholic. Like stated before alcoholism has to do with the way your body processes alcohol not the amount of alcohol consumption. Now whether or not one could bring on alcoholism by drinking excessively I'm not sure. I bet it's possible though.

If your definition of having a problem with something is simply to like doing it no matter how infrequent then I must be a work-aholic, a drive-aholic, a protein-a-holic, a jerk-off-a-holic, a canned-tuna-a-holic, a sex-a-holic, a laundry-a-holic, a skim-milk-a-holic, a egg-white-a-holic, a internet-a-holic, a.........I need a 12 step program for all of these since I do them all on a regular basis.

This is a weak argument, since the vast amount of alcoholics do not have the polymorphisms which have been linked to alcoholism. Simply because science can show a percentage of alcoholics have a certain genetic polymorphism does not remove the concept of "free will", as collegiatelifter mentions, nor implicates said genetic tendency as the cause of alcoholism. Can a person with insulin resistance not control their blood glucose levels? Can a person with obesity not control their weight?
Alcoholism is not a thing, but an action. All actions are controlled at the conscious level. If a person has a genetic polymorphism implicated in alcoholism yet never drinks, they are NOT alcoholics. Even stating that they are potential alcoholics would be misleading, for there is no individual who is not a potential alcoholic, if they so choose.
The medicalizing of behaviours has been the boon of the victim mentality of society. Remove the idea of control, add gene or "illness/disease" to the idea and you have no responsibility.
