so i'm now allowed to recline my seat because we are at crusing altitude so i do so and the guy behind me says 'can you please put your seat back forward, i'm working on my laptop' what is proper thing to do in that situation..

If he was nice about it and perhaps had a hot daughter with him, I would maybe try and meet him half way.

If he was a dick about, tell him to piss off and get to nappin.

Hot daughter!! You crack me up.. ;)

If they make the seat to recline, then its your right to recline it eh? Tell him to piss off and do his work in the airport while waiting for his next flight. ;)

You recling doesn't do diddly for his work space as the tray on the back of the seat moves back as well.

And I agree, tell him you are on steroids. That will make him pipe down.

you should have ripped your shirt off and flexed while giving the thumbs up

I venture to bet that 98% of the people on this thread don't take regular business trips and have to work on planes. AAP - the seat reclining in front of you most certainly does impact your work space.

Still, that dick should be used to it by now. You can still work with the seat reclined in front of you.

You should have urinated on his Dell.

It depends on how tall you are..I'm 6'3''..and I fucking hate when ppl recline their chairs.

I also have swole legs

you should have stood up and pointed your finger at him while screaming

"this man has a bomb in his laptop!! he has a bomb!!!!

You should have put your seat back to normal. Wait 5 minutes then recline it as quickly as possible, thus breaking his precious laptop.

I gather that the majority of people here, while talking a big game, would not hesitate to put their seat back up and then stew about it the rest of the plane ride. hell. that's what Id do.

You could stand up and turn around and just very politely and calmly tell him that you need to get some rest. Your sheer width should get the point across (STFU and mind your own buisness).

Depends how he asked. If he was cool about it I might accomadate him. If he was a dick about it, I would smash his fucking skull and take his laptop.

Same here. As long as he wasn't a total dick about it, I'd go at least halfway up and probably all the way up.

I feel sorry for business travelers anyway. Fifteen or twenty years ago, travel time was "free time" -- you caught-up on reading, sleeping, etc. etc. Now with new productivity expectations, travel time is work time. A company's rationale is "we bought you a cell phone and a laptop so get the hell to work anywhere, anytime."

The reason why people allow themselves to be treated like this is beyond me.

It's just a side effect of a hypercompetitve white collar market. For a guy who isn't willing to do "anything for the cause", there another guy right behind him ready to take his place. People tend to see white collar work as "cushy", but I think they overlook the stress associated with it.

Just wait till the next wave hits -- these Treo/Blackberrys are trickling-down to everyday white collar workers. Used to be, only upper level executives got them, but as the price falls and they become more common they will soon be standard issue. And high-speed wireless cards are becoming common too (i.e. Cingular Edge cards). That will increase the expectation for email/IM reachability to be a 24/7 thing.

I would have reclined it back up. The most I would do if i really wanted it reclined, is say "I'll meet you half way, dude." and Put it up a few inches to a smaller recline.

I'm a man of peace.

I'd have met him half way. I get to sleep for half the flight, then he gets to work for half the flight. And don't bug me 'til my watch alarm goes off, or I won't put it back up.

Oh it's here already. It is now "expected" that any person working in any form of "office" job has a blackberry type device. You should see the looks I have received from several clients when they learn I don't have one.

Job = life.

And its all in the name of productivity gains -- which is sad. Productivity ultimately drives real profit growth. US businesses look less and less toward productivity growth through capital investment and now look for it through "labor productivity", which is code for "work harder and longer you lazy bastard."

And it may help to get that t-shirt that says "I see little people" ;)

i think the words "B**B" (OM) and "steroids" if used while in flight, might get homeland security very upset. you could be forced off the plane at altitude with no chutte...jfyi

i would have laughed and told him to reclined his seat and if that didnt work i would have offered to smash his fuckin laptop.

no i love doin the are you fuckin serious that you think im goin to do that laugh. it helps drive teh point home when you tell them NO

if he was indian, you should have complied with his wishes immediately. he'll help you out in the next life bro.

i'm glad the rat race hasn't run me over yet. i have no device beyond a cell phone, which is my only phone. and my laptop is my only computer - it stays at home. very relaxed thus far. even a slacker like me can't complain.

I'm 6'6" and I just watch for the guy to reach for the recline button and since my knees are already against the seat I just tense up and hold it. The guy will usually try for a minute and then give up. There is absolutely NO WAY someone in front of me is ever going to recline their seat. But I don't recline mine either...sort of a penance I guess!
