I got a message "Your buddy list and icon cannot be viewed at the moment, but has not been lost"

Are they updating their systems or something? Really weird.

It's called Trillian, you can download the free version from here.

You can use it to encrypt your conversations (AIM chat is extremely easy to intercept and read).

Only problem is both you and the other person need to use it in order to be able to chat securely.
