That is really what works best for most people - taking the principles you've read and come to understand along with hands-on training and make a program of your own. Once you've followed someone else's training program for a time to obtain the basic principles of this complex sport of powerlifting - you have to come up with something that works 'for you' at some point. It takes some time to get to where you are able to figure that out though.
