Advice

I need some advice, so if people can not flame me then that would be great.

Here is just some background on what has been going on.
Ok so I was lifting regularly until about february when I decided that it would be best to stop lifting in season with hockey. Well the season is over and it is already time for tryouts for next year. Tryouts will be coming up in the next few weeks and it is very important that I am on the top of my game. Well since I stopped lifting I was running most days and pretty much maintaining me stature, with a bit of muscle loss. Well then about a month ago I got sick and I didnt run or anything for about a week, then in all the confusion of the end of my season and tryouts I missed alot of days for running and I put on a little bit of weight, not noticeable to anyone else (besides maybe a little bit in my face) but I notice when I have no shirt on. Anyway, my main concern is that I need to get stronger. Now is the time, it is key. I figure start now, continue through tryouts and the off season and hit next season looking bigger and being stronger on the ice.

Ok. But my main question is if i start lifting again (will do a 3x5) and just forget about the whole "running thing" (would probally still do light cardio on off days) would the muscle make me get the bloated, muscle under fat look or would , since I haven't been lifting in a while, at first lose some fat, get leaner and in turn also build muscle. Maybe in about two months (trainging camps usually start around june) would I be stronger, and stronger looking. (Beleive it or not the coaches are more impressed if you are strong looking.) I dont want to bulk, by the term you guys use it because I know if i got real big like most of you are I would probally lose alot of my skill in hockey, which is why I am training in the first place.

So to break it down into single questions:

If I started a 3x5 now would my play weaken?

If I started that 3x5 would at first I shed some pounds and get trimmer, or would I get bloated?

How much muscle can I really put on in 2 months for trainging camp?

If anyone reads all of that and responds I thank you very much!

3x5 won't weaken your play, stopping any sport-specific stuff and not playing/practicing will weaken your play. You WILL however need to adjust to more overall work and get more sleep, up cals, do whatever to foster recovery. I am saying this and implying common sense on your part.....you shouldn't do heavy squats the night before a game.

Whether you shed lbs or get trimmer or get bloated has nothing to do with 3x5 (or any training) it has to do with what you're stuffing in your mouth.

Most will tell you can put on much muscle in 2 months.....I think you can use muscle memory to regain a lot of strength/conditioning......if you have the ability to cram down tons of food and keep bodyfat at bay you can gain more than the average guy.

Don't stop lifting in-season.....DROP volume, but so SOMETHING.....you can then spend the off-season building new strength instead of wasting time getting back where you were.

ok thanks for all the great information...but if I eat healthy and do the 3x5 in turn with building muscle will I get more trim and such?

Long term if you build more muscle you will lower your bodyfat percentage and have to eat more to put on fat because of the calories required to maintain the muscle.

BUT... in the short term, when you're eating to gain weight, you can't completely avoid adding some fat along with the muscle. You can't worry about that though.

Yea I hear you but also my problem is I already have a bit of "unwanted" fat.....since it would be wuite tough to be a good goalie and be fat is it possible to lift, put on the muscle but remain trim and maybe look better?

Just lift and eat. Cardio can only help, but dont wear yourself out on the wrong days. If you are gaining too much fat, cut back on the calories. If you are getting too weak, increase your calories. You could also try tweaking the carb/protien/fat balance a bit and see if your body responds well. My best friend has a very low carb need, and he puts on extra weight any time he has extra. My lowering his fats and carbs a bit and increasing protein, he has managed to drop 80 pounds in the past 6 months. Of course he is exercising too.

In your case you have to respect what your body genetics are too. I have a hard time gaining fat, and a hard time gaining muscle. You seem to have a much easier time gaining fat, and probably muscle too.

ok..yea I guess.....so when I put on the muscle will I appear fatter (if I keep a good diet) or will I seem in better shape because of the added muscle.....the latter I assume

most everybody on here are fat power lifters so the chances of you becoming fat by following their advice is very likely. You must be careful who you listen too...

ok so do you want to help me?.......cause I don't wanna be a fat power lifter or anything of the sort I just gotta get stronger without getting fatter......a 3x5 is ok for this right? I jus wanna start lifting now, eat well and maybe lose fat and build more muscle

Hes messing with you. Lift and eat enough to keep your strength gaining or constant. Everything else has been covered. Less calories = less fat More calories = more of you to love, both fat and muscle.

so if i do the 3x5 and I keep my cals from getting too high and my fat intake and stuff from getting out of control...will the lifting also (maybe a little) shed some fat off too, maybe make my gut a bit smaller as a progress and add more muscle?

yes, but concentrate on controlling carbs - enough so you have energy to keep you going throughout workouts, training and games but not so much that you start gaining flab. don't worry too much about controlling fats (from natural sources) - of course that doesn't mean eat pork fat... but i think you get the idea.
