Advice desperately needed!

Hey. I have a question/concern for my step-father....

He was recently at the doctors and was told that he has very high cholesterol and he also has severe liver damage so he will be unable to take medication for his cholesterol/pressure problem. High cholesterol runs strong in his family. Both of his parents and sisters suffer from it. One of his sisters who struggles with it exercises daily and eats really well yet still she needs to take medication. His other sister, not so much, she is also a smoker and she is sitting near obese. My step-father has a history of alcohol addiction (he doesn't drink anymore, 100% free from it) but he still smokes (A LOT) and is cutting down on doctors orders, one more thing, he has been addicted to MANY prescription drugs, I'm talking about pain killers and sleeping pills.

I find this upsetting that he was prescribed Wellbutrin TODAY by the same doctor.... especially since he is still in the process of quitting smoking, not given a meal plan, and has severe liver damage!! I don't know a lot about this drug, but I know that it has a lot of side-effects and that it was orig. a anti-depressant. He was also ordered another blood test (they did one two weeks ago too). And he hasn't been given any sort of diet plan to follow to lower his cholesterol - what???? My mom thinks that his doctor is clueless. And he probably is. I have heard stories about this doctor and they have never been good stories. But the thing is... there are no other doctors accepting new patients, it's really hard to find good advice. We pretty much have to do our own research and I know that he can't do it/ won't do it (he's oldschool, you know, and his diet is NOT GOOD either)...

We're worried. Not sure what to do...

Trying to figure out some safe alternative methods in the meantime looking for some new doctors/consultations. Does anyone have any advice? Any more information needed I can get it for you. A diet plan made especially for him is what we're aiming to do right now...

He is heading into his 50's and has a semi-intense labour job. But works at his own pace (his own boss) He doesn't appear to be over-weight but he may be a little in the mid-section. I just moved back home a couple weeks ago and I notice that he doesn't eat enough...

Hope I posted this is the right section.

Thanks!
