RIKER I read your post; very informative and hope Simonf takes the same precautions as you did? Do a search on yahoo for accutane , there has been a suicide helpline setup for accutane and the company that makes accutane has whole website for the use of accutane!!!
I seriously think that any Accutane/Suicide myths are due to the following:
Many people have SO much of their self-worth and identity wrapped up in their appearance.... if someone is insecure, and has a bad case of acne, this is a HUGE problem.
Accutane can be just short of miraculous. Docs also in many cases will "hold off" on prescribing it, because of its potential side-effects (which are a real issue, but manageable). The fact that Accutane is touted as THE r solution, and the fact that Docs hold off on prescribing it, adds to the Accutane "mystique". The kids gets this attitude "this will QORK. This is THE hope …"
Now, take some already unbalanced teen who is WAY self-conscious. Acne adds to this. He hears of Accutane as THE holy grail solution. He fights and finally gets his Doc to prescribe it.
Now he starts. And like 3 weeks later his acne is WORSE (as can happen with Accutane, it make it worse for a while ....).
Now the holy grail solution is NOT working, his last option, the final solution, is not working, his acne is worse .... and without an explanation of this (dumbass docs who don’t fully convey this issue, of things getting worse before they get better) the kids thinks all is hopeless ... this feeds his already massive insecurity problem. ........ the final "solution" (Accutane) is not helping ..... so he does a Kurt Cobain and kills himself.
It’s not the Accutane. Its the side effects, or the lack of knowledge about it, fueled by previous insecurities and emotional instability.
And STUPID people and DUMBASS Docs that do not adequately understand the effects of the drugs. And Parents who do not due an adequate job of instilling real self-esteem in their kids.
Not that I am like really passionate about such thing. LOL
