Abortion doping?

I have "ethics and media" class during this semster, soon, we will be debating the olympics. My class's knowledge on 'roids is about that of the general media-driven public. I'm going to have to go easy on them. lol. Anyway, the teach. brought up the subject of "abortion doping" (Female athletes competing at the Olympics are getting pregnant just so they can abort the baby and by so doing enhance their performance through hormone doping.)

What the hell is this? I googled it a bit and got about 50/50 true/false on this. What exactly is this hormone, and is this true?

Cheers bros.

To be honest, there is likely to be a number of people on this forum, including myself, who consider this to be an offensive topic. To suggest that a "trend" of aborting babies for sports gain is developing in womens sport is crazy and without any foundation whatsoever.

From what I've found, this is not much of a trend nowadays, but something that was practiced 20 or so years ago (maybe even en recent years, in poorer countries). I just want to find out as much info on this as possible, including how exactly this would work. I'm NOT here to offend anyone, please. I realise some might find this offensive, but I can't do anything about that.

Then dont participate. The man isnt advocating it, he's asking a legitimate question. You might be offended by it, as Im sure many are, but to ignore something that offends you and pretend like it doesnt exist is one surefire way to guarantee it goes on forever. Stop being a pussy.

he's right it is very affensive but still i would like 2 know the answer. thinking that people in the olympics, an event made for respect and how far u could push the human body, would do this end a life 2 improve their performance is diminishing the whole point of the olympics. when u have an abortion it its noted and recorded so maybe they should do checks? but hey what r they gonna say, u cant have sex! ?

Oh, and by the way, i think its more than offensive, its repulsive, but definately interesting to look at the levels of depravity some will stoop to in an effort to achieve their goals, bump for more discussion.

Well said. K for you.

I'd really like to know if this actually occurs or if it's just a myth.

I took a female reproduction class back in college but don't remember a thing. Technically, would this even work? I don't know what happens to female blood levels after an abortion.

Somebody had to be sick in the head to even come up with this concept.

Cry me a river - very witty Justin!!

Well, where's the proof that anything like this ever happened, is happening now? If its such a great question, how come all I've seen in the replies has been a load of jibes at my expense and nothing else?

Don't worry boys, we're all friends around here, everything taken in the good nature its intended, but come on - to suggest this is happening is crazy

You don't like my gargoyle? :bawling: :bawling: :bawling: Then don't come to my house then if you don't like 'em. Goin on? Work, work and more work, and the search for on-line grad study.

RR, wasn't rying to come off as a dick man, sorry. Good humor indeed, you're a good sport. I've never heard of this doping before either, and apparantly, many others have not either. But that's why this thread was started.

I can see how it may work- when pregnant, a woen has up to 35% more blood volume circulating- thus more oxygen carrying cells- and better performance.... pretty f-d up though- lol

I dont see how "abortion doping" would even work...

Aborting via vacuum aspiration...the most common abortion used for pregnancies up to 13 weeks (sucking the baby out through a vacuum tube :() doesnt have anything to do with hormones, so I dont see how it would be advantageous).

IF they are actually doing this then make NO MISTAKE about it THEY WILL suffer reprocussions from it later (in the form of abortion related depression symptoms, and ALL the ripple effect that comes from that :( :()

I SURE AS HELL hope NOONE is doing that :worried: ...If it is true then these people are VERY sick...:o

As sick as it may seem, I think the principal purpotraters of this aren't medal-hungry women from the West but statist regimes - historically and maybe today.

These regimes don't think twice about killing millions. Witness the 2 million people the N. Korean regime starved to death in 1998.

You know how medal hungry these sicko dictators are. In western states, achieving a medal is cool for a nation but the respect goes to the individual athlete. In the dictatorships, the medal is a prestige device for the reigning thugs and helps them preserve power.

So you think these guys would think twice about doing this to their athletes if they thought it would help?

I imagine the effect would be similar to EPO - an easy way to find out would be to determine if pregnant women's hemocrit range is higher than the normal range. Or if post-abortive women's hemocrit level got a boost.

A hormone difference? MAybe the sex of the unborn child would be relevant - more test if it's a boy?

So basically the "athletic" benefit acheived is an increase in RBC count (and sheer bllod volume)?

Seems like an AWFULLY high price for an athlete to pay, but as you pointed out the dictator is the one pulling the strings...That is just a REALLY sad thing if that is true :( :(

Also, (while we're on the subject) it seems that in certain Asian areas, they are now genetically breeding "super athletes".... damn.

The USA inadvertenly did that back in the days of slavery (with the breeding of the strongest male slaves with the best female slaves), hence pro sports in America today are LARGELY dominated by black athletes...

Part of it was also natural selection - only the healthiest survived the boat ride and only healthy/strong slaves were purchased in Africa.

This is urban legend myth bullshit. The type of stuff you see in chain emails.

I understand this. However, what I was talking about is actually manipulating the chromosones ei: genetically<-- engineering so the fetus develops into a superior being. Plausible in asia??

I supposed this could be true. Sick, but true. When women are pregnant their blood flow and volume does increase as do their hormones. I hope this isn't going on, but with some countries it really wouldn't suprise me.
