AAP's FLEX Review - Feb 2004 - (details inside - long read)

AAP

Ok, here we go... first off - the cover.

It has Brock Lesnar on it. Ok, take a deep breath and on the count of three. 1..... 2...... 3.. WTF? Dude ain't no bodybuilder. Hell, I steal this magazine from the gym to see some jacked up dudes on the cover. He ain't jacked. Big? Yes. But mostly fat and water retention. And that mongloid appearance. I see this cover and the first thing that comes to mind is how Flex laughed and made jokes at IronMan Magazine when they had Steiner on the cover a few years back. At least Steiner LOOKS like a bodybuilder.

moving on along.... 10 (?) no numbers, just before the table of contents. Ok here that dude from the NOW supplement line ads. You know, in the past he was fat and puffy. Looked like he never even worked out, let alone used supplements. I would look at that ad and go "if he looks like that from taking your supps, I am going to skip. No thanks" Ok, new ad here. Same guy. Big time photoshop going on. He got a decent body... but that moon face is a give away. Who is this dude anyway? The fucking egostatical owner?

Next up... first article past the table of contents, it is a scientific analysis of creatine and the increase in..... oh wait. Muscletech ad. Take a look on the next page of Erik Fromm doing the tbar rows in the ad. If that face is not an indication of having a bowel movement that hanging on like a pitbull to your lower intestine, then I don't know what is. I mean, if I made a face that ugly and it was published in a mag, I would never show my face again. >>SKIP<<

Lee Priest up next for Twinlab Ripped Fuel. Now his Before/After pics are AMAZING because you know it is really him. The transformation is purely awesome. His offseason pic has him with a gut sticking out further than his chest. His onseason pic? Mindblowing. this guy got screwed so many times in his placings it ain't funny.

Page 33 - another cell tech ad. This one promotes New Improved Flavor. Whoa, hold on. Wasn't the last formula the "best tasting on the market". Guess it wasn't as good as it could get huh.

Few pages later, another fucking muscletech ad. Man, this is getting to be a habit. Ok, in this one... they actually admit : Sams results not typical. Sam is an extraordinary athlete and has been remunerated for his appearance. At least they didn't lie. In that sentence. They made up for it in the rest of the 4 PAGE AD!! err... I mean Scientic Journal.

Page 52 - Lee Haney and his son Josh. Josh ain't got shit for genes apparently. Even Lee is looking smaller than I recall from seeing him years ago.
Chris Cormier - wondering why he was being placed so low. Hello? Planet Earth to Chris. Cause you looked like shit man. Get real. Train some, actually show up and do the damn contest and not chicken out. Instead of saying you will train with Gary Strydom, just put the E down and get your shit settled. stop whining.

Page 53 Kevin Levrone. Responding to people calling him No-Legs Levrone he promises that he is going to devote a full five months to train this year. Hey Kevin. Ever tried to train year around? Maybe that's why you don't have a Sandow to your credit. I am really impressed. Kevin usually only trains 3 months out of the year. But five months... gosh, what is he thinking? P.S. Your music sucks. So if you want to make history, get your priorities straight.

Page 66 - Article on Dennis James and back training. Supposingly "new" exercises. Bullshit. Oh and before I go into the "new" exercises he supposingly does I would like to say to Dennis James - Please shut up already about your little gym and how you "hand made" all your equipment. Please. I saw your little video and you know what? Your equipment is the same as any other gym. Metal. Just because you took it out of the box and assembled it, that doesn't mean you "made it from scratch". Hell, the way you carried on about it, I was expecting to see shit made out of wood and duct tape. Second Shup Up Already rant... You can shut up about your 4th place at the Olympia. You didn't beat anyone? Who? Gunter? Like he had a chance. Kevin? Like he was half of his usual self. Rodney St Cloud? Darrem "Campus Model" Charles? Oh just stop already. Had Flex, Cormier, Ray, Ruhl, or Vince Taylor entered the show, you would have been placed behind them. Oh and the exercises are not unique at all. Sitting on box to do cable rows? Using an incline bench? Gee, I should have marketed these and patented them when I "discovered" them back in college. That pic on page 73 is freaky though. I don't mean freaky as in big, I mean freaky as in Adams Family. He sort of look like my friend Niko. And that ain't a good sign. Page 74. Bro, you going bald. Might as well hack the rest of that shit off like the rest of the guys done.

Page 80-81 Marcus Ruhl advertising Nutrex Lipo6. THIS is how he needs to come in and start placing where he is suppose to be. This has to be his best condition EVER.

Page 82 - Brock Lesnar article. Yawn. It reads like Vince McMahon wrote it. Full of hype and trying to sell rasslin as the hottest thing going. On thing though, apparently Chris Lund picked out his clothes to be photo'd in. They are the typical generic uber homo threads that Lund is famous for dressing his guys in. Fucking closet fag making guys wear these Daisy Duke shorts.

Page 94. Article on how to get HARD and RIPPED in 12 weeks. Didn't read it. Hell they were just saying how to add 20 pounds of mass last month. In 12 weeks. Four weeks later they want you to rip up.

Page 119 - Angry Bob. I figured it out now. His name. Angry Bob. If I looked like that, I would be angry too.

Page 160 - Doomsday for Jay. After Dexter whipping him at the O (along with Ronnie) but Jay placing ahead on name recognition. At the Show of Strength, Dexter smoked him. Jay ain't such an "Iron Man" after all. Out massed by Ronnie and out classed by Dexter. Dexter is so sharp it hurts to look at him. Even for me. I am no stranger to low body fat and vascularity, but Dex just flat out killed this show. Page 161, look at Jay from the rear. completely flat back and saggy glutes. with cellulite wrinkles. Dennis James lands lucky number 4 again. (fourth place) Kevin Levrone in third. (still need some legs homes)

Page 182 - backstage photos from the Olympia. Shows that Rodney St Cloud was paired up with Coleman to share a dressing room. (personally I think Mr O should have his own). Anyway, two blondes in there to prep their oil coatings.... Ronnie standing around smiling, looking big as hell and knowing it. Rodney looking everywhere BUT at Coleman. Ronnie looking squarely at Rodney and smirking... already seeing the spot in his back where his footprint was going to be on his march to win number six.

Page 183 - Arnold watching the Mr O on a big screen tv in the back (private office). Now this is a GREAT photo. You have to see it to understand what I am talking about. This is the Arnold you never see. He is sitting on the arm of a couch, watching the tv. There is no one else around. He is not smiling or laughing, just staring at the tv with a slack/flat look on his face. Like he is remembering when he was the one on stage. His name was what everyone was yelling. Or maybe he is looking at Lee Priest and wondering "is this what the sport has come to?" Never the less, he is lost in his own private thoughts.

Page 190, some ol' bullshit about Troy Alves. (who's he?)

Page 206 - Ms. Olympia. Lenda Murray wins. 8th time. Big ass girl. Beautiful lines.

Page 228 - Some kind of Fitness Comp. Big one. I think. Bunch of cunts jumping around trying to ignore their camel toe on display. I skipped this. (What?)

Page 262 - Some girls copying the great Madonna and her lesbian kiss. Please be original. It's old now.

Page 266 - Mr Kenya contest. At first, I thought it was a show that Ropeman (Ty Felder) had hosted. All the trophy winners were black. And if you have ever been to a Ropeman show, you KNOW what I mean by that and how prejudiced he is and will give first place to a non-white. Ain't no laughing matter about that. Every promoter in the South East knows his shows are a joke and travesty to honest competitors. And to make matters worse, not only will he give it to a black guy, but not necessarily the BEST black man. But rather, whichever black man trains at HIS gym and he knows. I hope this doesn't sound racist. At least from my end, just stating the facts.

Page 292 - Article by Lee Haney. Not only did they stick his supplement line ad in the very back of the mag (as usual), but his is the very LAST article in the magazine. It is there past the back pages. Past the classifieds. There is only one page seperating his column from the back of the magazine. Yeah, real classy way to treat the greatest Mr O of all time.

So there you have it. On a scale of 5 stars, I give this a 2. However, as it is well known, Flex is trying to capture the lion's share of the magazine marketing. This issue marks their first attempt on a serious note to take over. They have done this in many ways. They are :

1 - Lowering the mag price to $4.99
2 - No pictures of Curly Top
3 - No pictures of Curly Top
4 - Did I mention, no pictures of Curly Top? His name is not even mentioned anywhere.
5 - Ditto for Tom Prince. Not a drop of ink was wasted on that fat moron.

Actually, I do know Tom. Very well in fact. And for such a "nice guy", he has severe immature emotional problems.

A-ha! Finally some good info. I'm considering bustin a gut to train for the Master Mr Georgia. Now I know that even more important that dieting is joining Ropeman's gym. SWEEET!

This has been true in Georgia for a long time. Doc Neely was THE promotor in Georgia during the '80s. It was common for compeititors to train at his gym for the months leading up to a show. I had the Teen Mr. Georgia stolen from me in this manner.

Actually, I do know Tom. Very well in fact. And for such a "nice guy", he has severe immature emotional problems.>>>

Big time! Him and 'Angry Bob' live in a dream world. They think they are greats of the sport or something. I also love how 'Chic' (gotta love that nick name) used to compare himself to Steve Reeves. Steve Reeves?! In what mirror? Who lied?! Seriously, how could that ugly mug with frog eyes compare himself to someone who is considered one of the most beautiful men of all time. Not to mention Reeves had a better body, and he was clean with no supplements! Both Prince and Bob are a joke.

As for Brock, I was shocked to see his bloated mug, gyno having self on the cover. What the hell is he doing in Flex? He looks like the naturally big guy who took a few a-bombs and trained for a year. Just big and bloated, no quality at all. I love how he "may just become like Arnold and star in movies". Theres another pipe dream going on....

Ty sounds like an evil bastard. I saw a pic of him in a Flex a few months back, he looks real angry. I remember thinking that he looked like a racist bastard. He just had a look on his face that showed he was full of hate.

I feel bad for Haney too! That ad at the back is a disgrace. As are those pics they keep using of him. They don't use any pics of him from the early 90s, they always use ones that were obviously taken around 84 or so. He is always wearing a skull cap, army clothes, or tight ass jeans with the bottoms rolled up. They need to start showing him some respect, and give him a real ad. It really is a disgrace when muscletech has a million ads all over Flex, and the great Lee Haney only has a postage stamp sized ad.

Last month's issue was a blast. it had Dorian writing about his diet and protein powder intake. Very informative.

He didnt' like using whey isolate. Rather he used some kind of hydro-whey. but they didn't say the name. He said all the pros were using it. I wish I knew.

AAP- was it Hydrolysate? Super fast absorbing, tastes and mixes like shit tho. I'm sure you already know this tho.

bowl movement.....hahahahaha.........my thought also.

He liked to do young guys in the backside for money or drugs. I went over there one day to buy some juice (he was a big dealer too). I go inside and him and some other old fart are shirtless and there's like 2-3 guys early 20's in various states of undress. I'm "oh hell no, I'm not even trying to picture wtf is goin on here". I got the feeling that if I had been 10 minutes early I would have seen some scary shit.

The other guy that was with him was either from Forsyth, Fort Valley or Conyers, GA.

There were 3 of his friends that owned big horse stables in those areas and this is where he would get most of his winstrol (upjohn) and test suspension from. He traded young boys off on them for their horse supplies.

rumor had it that if you could take all the cock the man from conyers had, you got your shit free. apparently he had a monster cock that was insatible. If the guy you saw there was about 52-55, had a furry chest and was beginning to go bald on the top (crown) of his head, then that's the one.

All the things I didn't want to know in one thread. Thanks.

The age is definitely accurate but I'm not even thinking about the hairy chest. There was a big bust in Atlanta probably around 90'ish that some good friends of mine were caught in. Doc lost his gym in that one. Do you know what was involved? Weird thing is I saw Doc about '94 working as an OfficeMax flunkie. This was a guy who used to live in a luxury (and I do mean luxury) apt off Lenox, owned a nice gy, was probably the top promoter in the South save maybe Peter Potter (who learned his shit from Doc) and drove a 5-series Mercedes. I wonder wtf happened that ended with him in a min. wage job.

Do you remember Bruce West and how his promising career was laid out in this same fate. He was one of Doc's best proteges at the time.

The only big bust I was familiar with was the one Curly Top was in.

its cool to diss Flex magazine, but persoanl attacks on a BB that you dont like or even know is lame.

I like Tom well enough but he showed a pic of himself at MM guest posing at what he claimed was 8% BF. Well if he was 8% in that pic then I got a shot at making the Olympia posedown this year.
I can't stand Angry Bob's physique but he's hilarious.

Bob is kinda a joke at my gym... when hes juicing- he screams & yells at his ex-GFs & last time threw this girl across the gym.... Tom is totally opposite in personality-- prob why their buddies:)

Tom comes across as pretty genuine at Muscle Mayhem. I saw him Venice Beach but I was too chicken to go up to him. One giant mofo though.

Tom is fat. Don't be fooled by that 8% claim. He is claiming to weigh 287 drug free and completely natural. That ain't so. He maybe near 280, but he is NOT at the 8% level he claims. And him being 3% has to be a miracle. The man has never in his life gotten into that kind of condition. Actually, he is notorious for screwing up his whole pre-contest prep every single time he competes. (which isn't very much).

And yes, he is a complete moron. His greatest claim to bodybuilding fame is being a moderator on Chad's board. He is nothing but an internet bully who thinks he is some sort of god among mortals. Ask Darrem Charles about how much Tom "cared" when he was paid to train Darrem for a show. Ask Muscletech how much of a "gentleman" Tom was when his offer to be their spokesperson was declined.

You'd think Angry Bob was sleepin with a different woman every 12 hours after reading about him on Chad's board. He's got that annoying Dennis Frantz from NYPD Blue voice thing happenin.

from spending time at chads board I agree Tom seems like a ass with his condesending attitude towards others instead of helping, just my observations,I know he still loks a 100 times better than me

I dont know about Chad or his board.. but Tom is very cool, real nice, always helpful to the newbies & exp lifters at the gym-- no attitude at all.

One thing for sure. The fact that Gold's Venice has no standing calf machine is going to make Tom have a chest explosion very shortly.

Is that for real? I posted part of Bob Chicherillo's interview on the Anabolic board where he mentioned that the new management had thrown a lot of the equipment in favor of a fitness crowd. I was hoping that was just his opinion.

I copied this so you didn't have to search.

This is from the Getbig.com interview of Bob Chicherillo. He mentions what Gold's Venice has become:

- You train at Gold's of Venice, the mecca! Has anything changed lately?

Well, Gold's Venice is still Gold's Venice. It still has that aura about it; there is always a lot of things going on there; the energy there is very high. Those are the main reasons I like it there. It has changed a little over the last 5 years. When Gold's Venice changed hands, the new owners didn't have that much of an interest in bodybuilding. It is kind of an irony because Gold's Venice, as anyone knows, is the mecca of bodybuilding. And that place was founded on bodybuilding, and is a major part of history of bodybuilding. But they haven't kept up with the upkeep. The pictures on the walls, the pros, the winner of the Nationals and the USA's, stopped being updated around 1998. My picture isn't on there still.
It's funny because I remember one time just hoping and praying that one day my picture will be on that wall prior to me turning pro, and then finally I did it, and they are not doing that anymore. So I still don't have that picture on the wall at Gold's. Little things like that have been lost, that Gold's Venice is still known for bodybuilding. People still go there from all over the country who come there to see pro bodybuilders. They have made some changes. They have taken out a lot of equipment, some old good equipment which I wasn't really too pleased with. It is strange when a corporation runs Gold's Gym of Venice, because some of these decisions are made in New York City, and some of the people who make these decisions have never been in a gym before. It is kind of frustrating. One thing I did was to offer my services free of charge as a consultant, on what equipment to bring in there, or changing the gym around and things like that. I think it has helped a bit, and we made some changes with the format of the gym. I would hate to see a place like Gold's of Venice turn into a 24 Hour Fitness. This is our place.

LOL, I always wanted my pic on the wall at Doc's Gym in Atlanta.

Is it true? (you can tell us)

It was more than rumor. I remember once after a show a bunch of us where at his hotel room. Whenever Doc had a show he'd stay in town that night and have a big dinner party at some restaurant. I think it was Colony Square this time. Anyway at the room he's playing a video of Nationals where Matt Mendenhall is posing. The camera is slowly panning up his legs to his ass. Doc must have reran that one part 4-5 times in a row while he's nudging some silver haired coot. He wanted some of that action. LOL
If he liked you he always took care of you though, not necessarily in a gay way.

with Bruce West, in the beginning, there was "more" to it. However, once Bruce actually started real potential, not the "potential" that Doc always told cute boys they had and pumped their heads full of, he stopped the play-shit. He really did groom Bruce to become the next hottest thing. Bruce went to the Jr USA and singelhandly owned that whole contest. Not bad for someone that barely won a state show the year before.

AAP, you know Roger Stewart? Long-haired Brad Pitt lookalike with muscles....was on a different magazine cover every 30 minutes for a while. For some reason I thought he was mixed in there somewhere.

The dude with the awesome calves? I remember pics of him long ago.

280 drug free my ass. He is a fool, he has one foot in the grave, and he is talking about doing another show soon. Some people need to let go.

And LMAO at Bob being a player. I can't imagine frog eyes getting any play. Maybe from some butter faces, but that might be giving him too much credit.

When AAP says he knows these people, and what they are really all about, I believe him.

AAP... Troy Alves should have taken 5th in that show... imho. So he is someone to contend with. he was better than Darrem, Kevin, Gunter and a few others ahead of him.

Troy right now is a victim of no marketing. That is his biggest flaw. He is not gaining any good publicity or coverage from Weider, Twinlab, or Muscletech. He can have the best body in the world, but the simple truth is that judges vote for those who they are most familiar with. Troy really has to get his name and body out there. He has to do some articles for the mags, make some kind of endorsement deal and get his picture out there every month. Until then, it doesn't matter.

I do think he has the potential to rise above second tier level that Kamali, Titus, etc... are on.

I like Alves alot better than most of the other newcomers. I also like Quincy Taylor although he's got a long road ahead at 6'4". He needs to be 330 minimum. Last, I like Idrise Ward-el but I don't think he'll put on enough size to ever contend.
I see a big goose egg for Atwood, Martinez, Freeman, Duvall and Anthony.

AAP said:

The simple truth is it's Weider's show..........period.

Or comma,............and then, until people can get over the sheer mass phenomenon........Ronnie will continue to win.

That guy's had huge calves from day 1 and he's got the tiniest waist you'll ever see. I used to see him in Doc's gym in Atlanta sometimes, even though he's not from there. Super nice guy. I actually could use something like. I've debated building one but I don't have anywhere to cut the wood the way I want it done.
