A sad truth I am learning at work...

The harder you work, the more time you put in, the more you bust your ass and get shit done the right way the first time - the harder you make it on yourself b/c then people see how good you are and pile on more shit. Those that are mediocre and fly under the radar, neither impressing nor disappointing, have the life. What a sad state of affairs this is.

I learned that the first year on this current job. The more I busted my ass and hurried to fisnish projects, the more they loaded me up with work because they felt I could handle it. The more work I put into a project to make it even better than expected, the more they expected out of the next one. Which is fine as long as there is compensation of some sort (pats on the back, a raise a promotion, etc...). Unfortunately, in my case, there wasn't.

This waht I do at every job I get. I start out working very hard, at near my capcity, my bosses will then see me as a hard worker (I usually keep this up for 6 months to a year). After I have built a good rep, I determine whether the effort I give is worth the returns I get (pats on the back, raises, promotions, etc...). If it is not, I start slowing down little by little until I get things down to a comfortable, yet still productive, pace. Since I already made a good impression, my bosses will always see me as a hard worker no matter what. If I ever screw up, or if they catch me slacking off, they will make the excuses for me themselves because, in their minds, I'm always going to be a hardworker so the screw up must have been some sort of rare anomaly.

There's an adage an Econ teacher told me once. If you want something done right away give it to the busiest person in the office, because they'll do it quickly just to get back to what they were doing.

I hear ya, and you are doing the sensible thing. But, it kills me to have to look at it like that. I get all the satisfaction in the wolrd out of working my ass off and taking care of business the way it should get taken care of. But, as some point, you gotta look around and realize that, in some way, you are a chump. Why should I work my ass off when I am getting paid the same as others that don;t do what I do and I find myself without a social life b/c of work?

So true.

If only that worked with women, maybe Velvett would do me quickly just to get back to her man. :)

I'm on salary, so I don't get overtime pay, but I would still do up to 2 hours over time per day and would sometimes come in on Saturdays (voluntarily). Well, eventually my boss took it for granted and started expecting me to work those hours and giving me assignments like "When you come in on Saturday can you finish this up?". Personally, I enjoy working hard and being filled up with shit to do, it jsut makes the work day go by so much faster and i get a real good sence of accomplishment too. However, I am a representative of the positive reinforcement system. I'll work wonders for even just a "good job!". When I see no insentive (money, encouragement, or whatever), I lower the standard for myself and give them what i think is worth what I'm getting in return.

"The law of dimishing returns" at work

I've always hear it said that you rise to the level of your incompetence. That's why the hard workers stay where they are, because no one wants to lose them. The idiots get promoted because it is easier than firing them.

you just summed up my entire existence in this office for the past 2 months.

you just learned this?

The hardest working guy in the company is not necessarily the most highly paid guy in the company.

FAR from it.

You migth get bonuses, better treatment, etc. But you sure won't get respect, or better job security, or promotions cuz of it. No one became VP cuz he busted his ass off in accounting.

sad but true. I work my ass off at work in accounting nonetheless and get my shit done way before everyone else with their CPA's and masters degrees, Im only 1 year out of college (nieve I guess), and then I get to do more of their work bc they are too slow getting it done. It really sucks, Im salaried so no overtime and Im not at a salary grade where I get a bonus.

you need to learn to leverage your talent son.

woah bro, I didn't say I was lost or anything like that, dad. I understand the system and I will work it in the longrun. I am just simply making an observation about the state that the workplace is in.

if they are giving you more work and/or responsibility then grab your balls and ask for a raise. theres not much you can do about lazy co-workers
