A Question Only Women Can Answer... I think?

I'll start out by giving a few details.

I was into body building in the years before 2000... I'm 5'7" and I weighed 167 lbs. with 6% body fat...

I had had some health problems when I was a teenager (due to anorexia) and I was told I would never be able to have children.

Being a such a low bf % I even lost my period...

Low and behold, June of 2000, I found out I was pregnant. My doctor advised me to stop training completely because of previous health problems, he didn't want me to lose the baby.

Baby was born in 2001, healthy and fine. Unfortunately, I went up to 260 lbs.!!!! :smash:

I joined Weight Watchers and now I'm down to 135. I've started training again... I'm currently in a creatine loading phase (under supervision of my PT).

What I want to know is this:

I'm not finished having children. When I go to have another one, do I keep training? (But obviously not as hard and without supplements except for prenatal vitamins)

What are my options?

I don't have any children so I probably wont be any help. I just wanted to congratulate you on your weight loss!! I lost 20 pounds myself on WW. It's great isn't it. But there comes a time when you do have to move on if your goal is to have a nice rock hard muscular body. Congrats on your baby as well!! I read a lot about training when pregnant, because I want to be prepared. From what I understand the thing that is the most concern is cardio when pregnant. I have read somewhere that when you are pregnant your baby can't sweat and therefor can't reduce it's body temp. That's the one thing that was a red flag to me. I would most certainly check with a good OB/GYN. Good luck to you and congratulations!!!!

My wife trained through both her pregnancies. Cardio and weights. You have to be more moderate in intensity and don't go gonzo on diet. I've known a few others that have trained through their pregnancies doing mostly treadmill work and light machine work. I only know one lady that lost her baby -- and it was because she was really hitting the cardio hard and dieting for weeks on end.
 
Welcome to the boards! And congratulations - going from 260 lbs. to 135 lbs. is a huge accomplishment!

I haven't had children either, so I can't help there, but I did want to welcome you.
 
If you are not high risk and feel up to it there is no reason why you can't workout throughout your pregnancy. Just be sure to keep your heart rate @ 140bpm or lower. Also some women feel fantastic during their pregnancies I DIDN'T! I'm 8 months pregnant and I'm finally back in the gym. I was either sick (1st trimester)or tired (2nd trimester) for most of this pregnancy, but I'm feeling pretty good these days. Good luck with everything.

Hi Again!

Well I'm a magazine fiend(sP)!! I can't get enough of them. At my gym they have a subscription to fit pregnancy. When I am cooling down I always flip through it. It's very informative. Also on a side note they have great maternity clothes in there too!! When my mom was pregnant the clothes were so gross. It's good to know that when I finally get there that I will be styling. But first I need to concentrate on this body and make it as good as it can be, before I add any added stress to it. Try explaining that to the in-laws though!!! They think marraige, baby, right away!!!

You don't need any books on training and pregnancy. Just train the way you would normally train. Your body will tell you when too much is too much.

I have trained 7 women thus far through pregnancy (up to 8 1/2 months). Made some modifications with certain exercises (i.e., those lying on their stomachs), went lighter on squats, but other than that, everything was the same as it was pre-pregnancy.

I train a high risk OB GYN. He has no problems with women training during pregnancy, his wife did.

I had four children in 5 years so whether I liked it or not I HAD TO BUST MY ASS LOL. I tried to remain as active as I could and just listened to my body and ate pretty much what I wanted.

If you eat well and maintain an activity level where you feel energized rather than "beat to heck" (like you do after a good NON-PREGNANT workout) then you should be ok.

I've had a child every 3 to 4 years (I have 3 now - ages 11, 8, and 4 and I am having another one soon). One thing is for sure.. it was a good thing to keep my health and fitness level constant. Yes, if you aren't high risk .. keep training and train with modifications and follow the exercise guidelines set forth by ob/gyns (ACOG). When I was pregnant with my kids I was in great shape (good blood pressure, etc.) and my labor was relatively short. There are many advantages to staying in shape when you are pregnant. You might not be able to workout at the same intensity and you might have to change your diet (ie you only need about 300 extra calories per day while pregnant and you have to be careful with certain prodicts like supplements), but you'll get back to your routine eventually.

The best thing about keeping in shape while you're pregnant is that you're taking care of both of you. Then the next best thing is lifestyle. Your kid(s) learn how important health and fitness are. All of my kids eat right and exercise and I think that's the greatest of all..it's become a family thing. :)

I just wanted to congratulate you on your weightloss following your pregnancy. That is spectacular! Good job. :)

I'll give a little bit about my backround. I have a 15 year old and 16 1/2 year old and yes I did train through both until I got to big to move. I am 39 and pregnant with #3. My doctor said I could continue with everything. I'm a spinning instructor and taught 8-10 classes /wk. I wore a heart rate monitor and kept it down to around 140-150 bpm. I was showing some blood when I taught so the doc said no more instructing. I kept up with weight training and walking. Well, 3 weeks ago I went into pre-term labor and spent 5 days in the hospital in a Magnesium drip to slow down contractions. I was 24 weeks. Very scary. I was told that by working out like I did it actually helped me through all of that. My BP was low, BF % in check, just no negative things to add to this act of nature. By the way it was all caused by a fibroid which is located over the cervix (not a good place for it). So if I didn't have that I'd still be training. But bed rest it is until 32 weeks. 5 to go
So stay in shape train and do mild cardio and you should be all set. And you did a great job of getting all of that weight off. I'm sure it was hard work and you did it. You should be very proud of yourself.
