its very very hard on the parents, trust me

Please..Tell me what is easy in life, PB? I'm sure it's hard, but then again, being a parent IS not easy anyways! Matter of fact, having to deal with some "normal" kids can be a bigger chore now a days!

We only deal with the easy stuff that comes our way and throw away the rest? I'd love to be on that program!

Soooo...You're saying you could still love your girl if she's a drooling vegetable the rest of her life...But, since you can be in "control" during the 1st few weeks/months of the fetus' life, you'd not be able to love a DS child?

Sorry, I can't turn the love button on and off with "controls" and guidelines.

You never said drooling vegetable. You said confined to a wheelchair. If she was in a vegetative state and unable to be helped, I would probably be forced to pull the plug on her.

To go off in a tangent for a second.

We have talked about this b/c there is a very big case here in Florida dealing with this specific problem. The lady has been a veggie for over a decade and her husband wants to pull the plug b/c she told him if it came down to it, she would not want to live on life support. But her parents have blocked all efforts by the husband. The governor then rushed to get a bill passed ordering the docs to put the feeding tube back in. Now what right does the governement have to do this? None

I cant nor want to even begin to explain the troubles you have to go through in all aspects of life while trying to raise a retarded child, Ive seen it first hand, I would not wish this upon anyone

If the child goes to term and is born and is severely retarded, the parents are on the hook financially for life.
There was a case recently where a baby was born very premature with severe problems.
The parents stated they did not want the newborn placed on life support.
Without life support they knew it would die, and that was their legal choice.
The hospital put the child on life support anyway, and the child lived.
It will now need over $70,000 special medical attention every year.
The parents sued the hospital, said they were'nt financially responsible for a mistake the hospital made.
They lost. They are on the hook for the $70K for life.
Repeat: The court agreed they WERE Legally within their rights to deny life support. They were within their rights to have an abortion. But after birth and the child lives, you're on the hook.

I dont know if people adopt retarded babies, but id go that route

from what Ive seen there is no way in hell I could have a retarded kid, my fiances sister is retarded, and I would never want to go through what they went or are going through, shes 24 ands has the mental capacity of a 4 year old, she actually had the cops called on her the other day while she was at her group home because she was throwing a tantrum and she broke her door, shes a big girl as well, like 5'8" 300lbs and for some odd reason strong as an ox

It's called retard strength and there have been several threads about it. Not odd at all, it's the norm.

I'd want to have the child even with downs. Know one knows for sure exactley how this person experiences life. It may be quite rewarding and fulfilling for them.

Very true. I think it's stupid to make decisions based on what the kid's lide will be like.

Now if you as parents can't deal with it, fine. But don't try to use the KID's quality of life as an excuse to abort it.

Now if the kid was mentally fine but physically disabled that'd be a different story because they could understand what was going on and that they were deficient. But no one knows (that can effectively communicate it) what it's like to have Down's.

I think that there is a lot more testing that this couple needs to have done before jumping to any conclusions. Ultra-sound is only the first in detecting fetus abnormalities....

Not all tests are required in all states...and may not be performed unless requested. The easiest would be the alpha-feta protein test. This is a blood test which checks for 3 hormones in the blood, that are common to those with down's or spinal bifida.

The second test, which can be performed at 10 weeks, is the Chrorionic Villi Sampling test. The doctor's take a small sample of the placenta...and cause's very little 1.5% risk to mother and fetus.

And the last possibility would be an amniocentisis, however there is a risk of miscarriage with this test...
