8.8 quake hits chile

was it on the news that there was a 7.0 in japan sometime yesterday??? i swear i didn't see it but it was on the earthquake gov list...

we're not in the ring of fire but CO has baby quakes from time to time. thanx to our rocky mountain fault lines. we had a 3.7 back in august 09 somewhere near craig/steamboat!? 2.8 30 miles south west of trinidad yesterday. denver had a 6.6 in 1892 which is odd.

Everywhere has baby quakes from time to time. In the 70's Colorado experience tons of earthquakes due to drilling/fluid emplacement in our fault escarpment. Though considered a seismically dead area we still get the occasional shift, but it isn't caused by local phenomena. One of the biggest earthquakes ever in the landlocked areas af the US was in Missouri in the 1800's now that was bizarre and still unexplained.

8.8 is a whopper! I hadn't heard about it since our satellite TV is out due to weather this morning, but I'll go on Google. I hope the best for the victims! Scary we're WAY overdue in SoCal for a big one on the southern end of the San Andreas. About 50 to 150 years overdue statistically, if I recall the math.

scots bro, you're the man when it comes to this shit.

my gf has been up early on the USGS website, investigating. (she tracks and reads about quakes too, ever since she was caught in the Northridge quake in '94...and we live in northridge right now).

she thinks this recent activity around the pacific ring is meaningful, and bodes ill for us here in cali. thoughts?

Unfortuneately while we know a great deal about the causality of specific events we still have no real way to predict or interpret their patterns. Could be any number of reasons as to why the sudden spike in activity from increased vulcanism to a change in density along the spread banding. If I get time I'll take a look at the data and see what they're saying.

There is a Tsunami Warning for one fourth of the planet. An imminent Tsunami in Hawaii will arrive in about 2 hours. NAVY evacuated Pearl Harbor as a precaution. A wave of 130 feet struck Juan Fernandez Islands, 300 kilometers off the coast of Chile a few hours after the cataclysm. An elevation of 7.7 feet in the sea was detected by the buoy in Talcahuano, Chile. The wave moves at around 500 Kilometers per Hour.
