5x5 is wrecking my joints !!!

I am 4 weeks into the program and every joint in my lower body is very stiff my right knee especially the results have been great, body compositions wise but I don’t think I can continue the program due to the joint issue.. Has anyone had this issue with bill stars 5x5? Any suggestions for this stiffness?

How bad is the pain? How long does it hurt or just while squatting? Does it hurt when you DL from the floor?

I would repost this in the training forum if you want any decent advice on the 5x5. My knee acts up a tad about 8 weks into a 5x5. When it bothers me I deload for a few weeks or I switch to 20 reppers for a month then re-evaluate.

Good to hear about the positive changes. It is a great program if you want to be strong.

Are you taking Winny or dieting?

I'd back off a little bit and maybe drop down into the 10-12 rep range for a few weeks to give the joints/tendons a break from the heavy poundages.

As you age, this is really important....i'm learning this first-hand. I'd listen to your body before it gets much worse.

Warm-ups are crucial.

Sound advice as we would like to be doing this for a long time to come. When I was younger it was always about "more weight, more weight, MORE WEIGHT"! It took an injury that caused ~90% paralysis to my left shoulder, biceps, triceps, traps, and rotator cuff muscles to put things in perspective. Hope you feel better, brother.

its not so much during the work out.. It hurts a little for the first few sets or so but after that its fine.. It usally starts hurting the next day I have not worked it since friday but I am on my feet all day at work (bartender) and it is still very stiff... I hate to end the program early when I am seeing such good results from it but i dont want this to cause any serious injury..

Not running any gear at the moment and my diet hasent changed much. Was Going to start a new cycle next week test,eq. Not sure now though I might put it on hold till everything goes back to normal

what is your warm up like. you should be doing 15-20 of warm up at least. Also stretching is important.

if your warm-up is actually sufficient, then sounds like over training

Sounds like some deloading is in order. This link can also be accessed from Madcow2's compilation on 5x5 training:

Basically, what you want to do is take a week every 4-5 weeks to give yourself a chance to recuperate. You can do this by upping your reps to the 8-12 range. This will give your joints a chance to heal and the rest of your body a chance to recharge as well. Don't increase the volume on your sets to compensate for the lighter weights you're using as this just defeats the purpose.

Are you on anything at all...like Aifm or any ai....sounds like your too dry....PCT maybe

It very well could be you haven't been off long enough.....alot of times going heavy when your off cycle is usually the culprit.....like Mac said go light.....save it for when your on....just try and maintaim what you got from your last cycle...train light and wait till you cycle again for the heavy shit....your body will really apreciate it..
